Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility is Totally Lamsauce!

Bill Gates and the XboxMan the backwards compatibility list on the Xbox 360 is not looking good at all.

First of all there is no way to transfer over your old save games from an Xbox 1 to an Xbox 360 with a hard drive so even if your games do play you can't move your old save files over and you are going to have to start from scratch. There is no way to move them over via a memory card or over the ethernet ports. Your saved games will live and die on that old Xbox. I heard it on Xbox Live own Major Nelson's podcast.

The Generation NEX is getting beaten up over a 95% compatibility rate while Microsoft is really really bad considering that they have access to all the technical info for the Xbox hardware to build the emulator for the Xbox 360. I know that the Power PC and ATI chips in the Xbox 360 is a radical difference from the Intel Pentium 3 and Nvidia chips that power the Xbox 1 I am sort of surprised that Microsoft is calling it backwards compatible.

The Xbox 1 games that I own and play that will not work on the Xbox 360 are
Blinx the Time Sweeper
Tenchu Return from Darkness
Jet Set Radio Future
Shenmue 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Crazy Taxi 3
Dead or Alive Ultimate
Doom 3
Destroy All Humans
Metal Slug 3
SNK Vs Capcom SVC Chaos
Starwars Republic Commando
Starwars Battlefront
Project Gothem Racing

BBQ and MR XBOXI only have nine Xbox 1 games that will work on a Xbox 360 and fourteen games that will not. That is a 39% compatibility rate. That is just pathetic. I know it can play Halo and Halo 2 but give me a freaking break. There is more than just Halo 2 despite it being dangerously dope.

I have faith in Nintendo getting Gamecube games to work on The Revolution since they share the same maker of CPU and Video chips but the backwards compatibility in the PS3 will have to be completely worthless in order to suck on the level of the Xbox 360 weaksauce compatibility.

I know that most people that are going to get the Xbox 360 with the hard drive bundle were looking forward to playing old Xbox 1 games on it but since the compatibility is piss poor and there is no way to move over your data it looks like the 360 hard drive is going to be mostly worthless from a gaming perspective. There is no way in hell that I am ever going to trade in my Xbox 1 for a Xbox 360 with a hard drive. I might get an Xbox 360 Core system down the line once there are good games for it but the backwards compatibility is so bad that I am surprised to see that they are even trying to sell it to the public.

I am sure that there will be kick ass games for the Xbox 360 and it will be super cool for Windows Media Center and HDTV owners but if you want to play Xbox 1 games then you better keep your old big ass black and green Xbox.

A core system? Thats just wrong.

well, the good news is they're going to supposedly update the list with new patches as they become available.

I don't have much faith in it personally.

I still can't believe there isn't an emulation patch for Street Fighter Anniversary Collection.

I swear I saw Panzer Dragoon Orta on the xbox.com's list of backwards-compatable titles. Also, the list of titles there are only the ones that will be available at launch. This time next year, they'll probably have knocked out a majority of the original xbox titles (hopefully). But I'm with you on this one, I'll be waiting until Oblivion comes out to get one.

i was wondering about game saves and how you'd transfer them to the new systems. they could've put a memeory card slot on the back for that i'd wager. i guess the memory card guy was sick that day at microsoft. i wonder how the other two systems will approach the issue of game saves, especailly with nintendo going so far back and all. guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Well the Nintendo Revolution has two slots for Gamecube memory cards and 4 Gamecube controllors on the top of the unit under a hinge door.

Why not get a core system if the hard drive is not going to be needed for Xbox 360 games and since the ability to play some Xbox 1 games is going to suck?

The game saves was a decision that Microsoft made to supposedly keep out hackers. That is what it they said on Major Nelson's podcast.

I think they should just take out all the computer chips and make it a box that plays music with spoons. That would keep out hackers.

Since you mentioned the Generation Nex there was something I wanted you to see...

http://ameba.lpt.fi/~hataarto/nes/

There is supposed to be a VERY small amount of premade carts to be released early on but most will be kit-based. (You buy the PCB, uplink cable, and upload software for about $15 from the designer, then go and order the needed parts from other vendors and assemble it yourself - not a huge problem but the CPLD is a pain to put in)

As for the Nex and compatibility, more people are upset about Messiah swearing it wasn't a NoaC Famiclone then it turning out to be one, more than the compatibility problems - the problems just stem from that so it puts salt in the wound. I'll buy a Nex, when they start showing up used at the same price as a Famiclone. Messiah shall make no first party money of me anymore until they release an "oops, we're sorry" announcement.

just wait and wonder when PS3 won't be compatible to every psOne and psTwo game...

it's really lame but on the other hand not as bad as no compatibility at all.

Posted by: Jim at November 16, 2005 11:28 AM

The compatibility rate is still higher than George Bush's approval rating.

Posted by: BBQ at November 16, 2005 2:13 PM

Well there has been two PSOnes two PS2s and the PSX and Sony has not had any problem with compatibility especially since the PSOne games on the PS2 are pure emulation. I am optimistic but we shall see. You know we have never seen a PS3 game running on a final PS3 system. The Xbox 360 does have one hell of a lead by hitting the market at least a year or so before the PS3. I am tempted to wait on the Xbox 360 until I see a Nintendo Revolution.

Dude you are a freaking idiot...Battlefront is BC and so is a whole lot of other awsome titles...If your going to keep this crappy site up make sure to update it once and awhile....And to let all Playstation fans out there know who read this,STOP comparing it to Xbox360..You CANNOT compare Ps3 and xbox360..Especially saying Ps3 is better..It was set to release Spring 2006 it is now fall 2006 and it still isn't out..Xbox360 is here and kicking so until Playstation brings their system out shut up...Xbox has proven itself unlike playstation which like i said hasn't even released its system so there....

i dont see why all xbox games cant work on the 360 like.ps2 lets you play ps1 games so why cant xbox do this

Posted by: steven at August 25, 2006 6:09 AM

well of course they are not all going to work, like come on people this is microsoft, but there are a lot of games that should not be on that list and a lot that sure should be like doom 3 and republic commando, and as far as save games go if u really liked that game that much, and wanted to contiune playing them then the old system should be good enough or u should like them enough to start from scratch, plus the xbox and the 360 have a completly different harddrive confige, plus look at that hard drive come on its that big and is only 20 gbs... the old xbox was a standerd old school harddrive. also since the org xbox was easily hackable, it would provide secerity issues with this, (and i don't think i will be playin my orginal save file in zelda for nes on the revoultion either so get over this issue i think, oh and morrowwind should have worked.(also i would not recommed playing fable on ur 360, mine worked fine until i played that then i got a terriable glitching noise and a very scary white and game screen that would freeze and loop sound eventually making it so i could not save to my harddrive without it freezing(to be expected from lionhead tho look at black and white 2 for pete's sakes....)

Wow, this post is old. Heh. I have collected every console system that has come out since the NES, plus the Atari 2600 and 5200, but Xbox 360 is the one I do not have yet. I want more RPGs on this system before I buy it as well as more bugs to be fixed. I don't care about backward compatibility with Xbox 360 as much as the other two since the amount of good games it would be
missing is far less than Wii or PS3 would. (Since Microsoft only has one old system)

I was lucky to buy Playstation 3 in it's 60GB PS1 and PS2 backward compaitible form. Nintendo needs to speed up their Wii downloads. It really sucks that they have to re-acquire all of their licenses from third parties. What the hell is up with them releasing Breath of Fire 2 before even uploading Breath of Fire 1? What a way to spoil series continuity. But not to complain, it is a very good start. As more companies join, more systems will be added and so will more games.

PS3 is starting off slow, but in time it will have some good stuff for the RPG fans. You can already download Wild Arms 1 for $6 rather than buy it for PS1 for $30-$40 on ebay or amazon.

I will probably wait until the price goes down to get a 360 if not a lot of improvements are made.
