Where Good TVs Go When They Get Old
Well it looks like the holidays are over and it is back to work for me. I will also be back to work regularly on this site so don't you worry I have plenty of nerdly stuff to bring home to you all.
Note: This is not the actual TV. I should get a picture.
I just got back from Kymberly's house where I hooked up a mid 60's RCA Black and White 9-inch mini TV in her bed room. When we were in Richland we checked out the Goodwills, thrift stores and used book stores. It is one of the only fun thing to do in Eastern Washington. You see they have a rapidly aging population but not as much Seattle style hipsters to soak up all the retro-coolness from the just plain old and busted stuff.
I found this perfectly working Black and White mini 9-inch TV for a mere six bucks. It had a built in antenna and prominent vertical and horizontal controls knobs on the back of it. I had to get an adapter so we can run a co-axial cable into it using the screw on antenna mounts. I was able to get her VCR from 2001 hooked up as well as my TV-Games all in one Namco joystick to the TV and I took a spare rabbit ears antenna and duck-taped it to the table and fed it into the VCR. You see she loves to watch I Love Lucy, Dragnet and Peter Gun episodes as well as old black and white movies. The taped I Love Lucy shows just look plain cool on the old set and it just has a glow that is lacking from crystal clear twenty first century TVs.
It is sort of like how some albums just sound right on vinyl records and certain dishes taste right when they are cooked on a stove range instead of nuked in a microwave. So here is my idea. If you happen to be a gamer who is into mid 80's Nintendo games you might want to check out a Goodwill, eBay, garage sales or what ever for a mid 80s TV set. That way you can capture what it really looked like back in 1988.
If you really want to be retro-keen you can hook up your Playstation2 to the 80's TV and play some GTA Vice City in some super extra old school flavor with a Mad Catz RetroCon gamepad. Oh yeah. While your at it you could probably get a big ass early 80s Ghetto-blaster tape deck for about ten bucks. It is a necessity in busting out the old school tunes.
Of course I recommend that you try out and test all old equipment before you lay down money for them just to make sure that things are working but if they were kept in good conditions and properly cared for you can get years of use out of an old TV, turn table and cassette deck.

Now if I can only get off my ass and find a good Colecovision hookup like I had in 1982.

I got an early-mid 80's tv with the fake wood panneling and all. I play all my games on it including those NES classics.
