Web Pages to go on a Notebook PC : A Tutorial
I am on the Washington State Ferry Kalletan on my way to Seattle and I thought I would share a little laptop trick that you can use with Windows XP and Mozilla. I am a big fan of the Palm OS and Pocket PC program and Avant Go. They way that it works is that you subscribe to several different web pages and publications and when you Hot Sync your PDA it downloads those pages into a cache and loads them into a mini browser on your PDA. This allows you to read the paper and your favorite frequently updated web sites when you are not connected to the net. Like when you are on a ferry.
So I thought about this and realized you can almost pull off the same trick on a Windows XP notebook and Mozilla ( or your favorite tab capable browser ). First book mark all the pages you want to cache into categories and then save those as a group of tabs. I have mine broken down into groups like "News", "Game News" and "Nerd News". This will only load the first page but it works great for reading headlines on news sites, Web Comics and Web Logs.
Then in the morning and wake up your notebook and open a browser windows or two. Then trigger the group of tabs you want to read remotely. Now this may take a while to load them all into memory given the speed of your net connection. So I suggest you go take a shower, eat a bowl of cereal, drink a beer or whatever you do in the morning.
Once all the pages were loaded into ram select "Turn off Computer" from the Start Menu. Then hold the Shift key and the Stand By option will turn into the Hibernate option. This will save the data in your notebooks ram into a temp file and shut down the PC totally but keeping your morning web pages in the hibernation cache.
So then when you get the the ferry or where ever you are and you can read your web comics or blogs instead of looking at the seagulls.

You know what? I have been trying to do just this for a long time...what i really want to do is have someone create a program that is open source and free that would allow me to download evey one of my favorite sites in there entirety...and have an interface that allows me to accept or to reject IMAGES so that the download is a bit faster and focuses on content. I really think it would be cool and i will start searching for it tommorrow while i am practicing my L33t 3D skillz. WORD?
