Treamcast!
Hong Kong pirate companies have made an unlicensed un-official portable Sega Dreamcast that they have unimaginably called Treamcast. I have seen pirited Famicom and Genesis/MegaDrive hardware come out of Hong Kong and Taiwan but this is a first pirated Dreamcast that I have seen. It is based on a modified US Dreamcast and it looks like the Hong Kong pirates are buying used Dreamcasts and modifying them to be portable with their own screen and new case.
Perhaps it stands for "Travel Dreamcast" but there is no battery so you need to plug it in but in the high-tech space-saving conscious lands of Asia that would be attractive.
Hell this is enough to go to Hong Kong and risk getting SARS to get your hands on a portable Dreamcast.

Isn't HK safe to travel to now?
Posted by: l33t k1w1 at June 15, 2003 1:14 PM
Yeah but there are Kung Fu crazy monks in Hong Kong and there are like a thousand action movies being made there so it can't be super safe. You never know when Jackie Chan is going to fall on you or you could get caught in the cross fire in a John Woo movie.

Man i saw that at Liksang.com last night and had 3 words. "MUST HAVE ONE!"
Posted by: Henry at June 15, 2003 4:34 PM

My own Dreamcast and Shenmue II has taught me that Hong Kong is full of shify characters. Order at your own risk.

Yeah you are right, Shenmue 2 does make Hong Kong seem very dodgy, but if you don't take these risks you'll get nowhere in life. Anyway, Shenmue was set in the early 80's & everybody and everything was dodgy then, just take a look at mullet haircuts, what was going on there?
Posted by: Edge at June 19, 2003 4:45 AM
Besides the occasional organized crime, Hong Kong is one of the safest places on the planet and has had one of the lowest crime rates. But their action film industry stretches the truth a bit.
Besides if Hong Kong was a totally safe place in Shenmue 2 it would be a very quick and easy game.
Posted by: Jake at June 19, 2003 5:05 AM
A very true and valid point. One of the reasons that makes Shenmue so much fun is that you are expecting to get into a fight or get mugged at any point (or get chatted up by sailors if you are into that sort of thing) and now because of Hong Kong & their 3rd party peripheral maker Treamcast (who have been making DC peripherals since the DC was born) we can now get mugged and get into fights without leaving the safety of our car. Splendid!!! The downside is I don't think it has a modem, being able to access the net through a mobile would have been a great feature.

I just got my Treamcast today. Nice little piece-o-pirated-HW ;) Boots all region games, comes with a remote controlled VCD/MP3 player, two pads (w/ 9 buttons), etc. Most notable difference to original DC is that there is no slots for VMU in the controllers.
Posted by: Pacdam at July 16, 2003 4:43 AM
Someone asked me in email whether the original controllers work with Treamcast - yes, they do. By using them, the VMUs can be used as well.
Posted by: Pacdam at July 17, 2003 12:44 AM
You know that are SARS and had killed a lot of people. If you buy a Triemcast, you buy a product directly send from Hong Kong and you'll have a risk very dangerous.

Hong Kong is now officially Sars free I would justtake the risk of ordering a grey market thing over the net. It sounds a bit sketchy
Posted by: Jake at July 17, 2003 7:06 AM
Treamcast is the name of the company that makes them.
I'm pretty sure. They made a few other DC Accessories as well.

I recieved my treamcast today I still can't believe my eyes,It's great!I heard that it was modded to play imports and vcd's to my disappointed it didn't,only u.s games so i have to stick to the swap method as the same for vcd's but the system looks and plays great the screen does blur a bit for fast action but i think it gives it a great effect.

Cool Boxer! take some digital pictures and write a review and I would love to post it. My email is jmetcalf@8bitjoystick.com
So where did you get it from?

it's been several weeks since i've got my dreamcast OOPS! treamcast i've been playing almost non stop, doing all sorts of experiments.I personally have a large collection of imports and backups as well as U.S games,i wanted to see just what would work and what wouldn't and this is what i have so far.the treamcast will play all the imports using the swap method so far ,that i know of, except mark of wolves.cd-r(backs ups)that's a different story ,out of approximately 30 back -ups it played half of them, most loaded but it didn't play, the system seem to reconize just about all the fighting games,so it 's iffy on back-ups.I also tried various emulators and so far the(nes) nester 6.0 wasn't reconized but the 7.1 was,it coud be the brand of cd-r that was used. The fighting controllers work extremely well, that all for now.

I saw some Treamcast consoles for sale on Ebay. Kind of expensive, but it takes the risk of international shipping or customs away from possibly costing you $189.

i want a treamcast but i want it to play all my cdr's has anybody used a modchip yet if so did it work on all disc and does it have a slot for internet connection
Posted by: silent at November 12, 2003 11:50 AM
Alright, I want to help. The treamcast WILL play all import, copied, regular games and vcds. May require a boot disk sometimes and may require you copy your backup to a different brand cdr. But it will work. A treamcast is a dreamcast gutted and rebuilt. If it works on your dreamcast it will work on a treamcast. I personally gaurantee no problems with a treamcast as long as you get it to your door safely. Not nessasarily physical dangers of hong kong, but people online claiming to sell them, then they just take your money, lan-kwei.com for example. I saw a post HERE stating they sell them. So i checked them out and they are crooks, whom never send product. Anyway Hope My post helped. Peace

oh yeah,
one more thing
the treamcast is compatible with all dreamcast hardware. Even the modem, you just have to buy one or use your old one. Thanks.

The Treamcast should play all the discs that a normal Dreamcast should. You might need to use a boot disc on some games and programs.
