To Expect In the Next Generation of Videogames?
There is much more that is unknown about the next generation of video game systems than what we actually know about them. We have the Nintendo DS, Nintendo N5, Sony Playstation 3, Sony Playstation Portable, and the Xbox 2 : Xeon to look forward to. But one has to wonder what would you like to see in the next generation of video game systems? There is no way that everyone can be pleased and the game designers are limited by the technology at hand and financial constraints of high tech manufacturing and development.
What would you like to see in the next generation of video game systems?
Price- Hardware price point at $200 / EU 200
- Hardware price point at $300 / EU 300
- Hardware price point at $400 / EU 400
- Will the system have 5 times more 3D power than the current generation of game systems
- 10 times more 3D power than the current generation of game systems
- 50 times more 3D power than the current generation of game systems
- Will there be a hard drive
- Will the size of hardware be Gamecube small, PS2 medium or Xbox Xtra large
Networking
- Will the system have Internet networking
- LAN networking
- Modem Networking
- Cross game instant messaging
- Wireless Wifi Networking
- Shared Network Gameplay
- Voice Chat
Multimedia and other options
- Will the system have DVD playback
- Internet surfing
- Non Game Multimedia playback like photos and MP3 files
- Support for non standard console controllers like USB Keyboards and Mice
- TV recording like a Tivo PVR
- High-definition TV support
- Linking to a hand held game system
Games
- Will the system have sequels to older games
- Customized game content and Mods
- More US, EU or Japanese game developers
- Ease of game development
- Cross-platform game development
- Backwards Compatibility
- Console games in sync with PC game development like Doom3 on Xbox at the same time as Doom3 PC
- Would you get a game system from the same company who made your current generation one
- What about if there were a high-end game system that was compatible with a less expensive lower-end game system of the same generation. Like the PSX and the PS2
It is fun to guess and speculate but we will all just have to wait for the next big press conference by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for them to show what future video game coolness they are cooking up in their black project labs
I am more likely to get a PS3 and a Nintendo N5 than an Xbox2. I don't know what to make about the Nintendo DS but the Playstation Portable has my name written all over it.

It would be nice if someone would finally design a console akin to the TurboDuo - sleek, efficient, and meant to only take up space the internal parts need. The next Nintendo console needs to have a GB/GBC/GBA slot built into it instead of having to purchase an expansion accessory. People that play GameCube games usually play GBA games and vice versa, especially with all the linkable content. Even if the Gameboy format leaves cartridges Nintendo knows people like to play the Gameboy series, people like to be able to play the Gameboy series on their TV, and people love to be able to take their game progress with them. (again, this is almost like the Turbo Express portable where the coolest feature was it played the same games as its console counterpart)
I'd love to see a modern version of the Dreamcast VMU be incorporated into the next wave of consoles, using internal NiMH batteries that would recharge themselves while plugged into the controller much like how the GBA-SP recharges except pulling power from the controller port.
Finally it would be nice to see a little more technical development before console hardware releases. It's unacceptable to release consoles with cheaply manufactured components (PS2), controller cords that are a pain to store (GameCube), controllers that have buttons horribly misplaced (XBox), or features that people want so bad that they end up installing them on their own (GBA).

I like the gamecube controller. I know it is not the best for playing Capcom Vs SNK 2 but I think that it works well for most games.
The N5 could probably emulate a GBA or a Nintendo DS in software.

I love the GameCube controller, just not the cord, it seems to always get looped up. Of course the WaveBird freaking rocks and resolves this problem.

The big thing I want them to do, is put better DVD drives in the next gen systems. My Xbox and PS2 always get disk read errors, even though I keep my discs spotless. I noticed that I rarely had the problem on my top loading systems, and when I did, it was simple to fix with some lens cleaner and a q-tip.
The other big thing I hope they do, is to load up these new systems with lots of ram. Many developers find themselves having to strip things out of a game in order to work with the limitations, or add processor intensive crap to manage an object matrix being loaded off of a disc. The main reason that PS2 games look so crappy is that they have so little space to load textures into. Trust me, it's a pain in the ass! If any of these new systems have less than 256megs of ram, I'm going to be pissed! Ram isn't the only thing though. I hope they also try to keep the complexity of the hardware architecture down. The PS2 is capable of a lot, but very few developers are able figure out how to use that power. Only the very best are able to reap the benefits. (look at Metal Gear Solid 2) The Xbox is much easier to develop for and that's why the graphics tend to be better. And when you put that simplicity into the hands of a Japanese developer(Team Ninja) they blow your freakin' mind.
I personally hope that the PS3 is more powerful and easier to develop for then the Xbox 2. That way we'll have a lot better looking Japanese games and I won't have to buy games that just look pretty, but play like crap.(Splinter Cell) Maybe if the next Xbox isn't huge and ugly, it will do better in the Japanese market.
The ultimate would be if SEGA announces a new console and has Shenmue III in their lineup!
I'm sure no matter what I'll end up buying all the consoles because I'm a sucker for technology.
