There is no such thing as a "Next Generation" videogame system

I sort of need to get something down on paper. I have been growing leery of the terms "Next Gen" and "Next Generation", when talking about consoles, graphics, gameplay and game design.

The problem is that as soon as a game system comes out it is no longer a "Next Generation" system because at that moment it becomes current generation. I've been playing games since the Atari 2600 and at some point every single video game system since then has been called "Next Generation" at some point.

The Colecovison, Atari 5200, Sega Master System, Turbo Grafx-16, Sega 32X, Atari Jaguar, Sega Dreamcast and Gameboy Advance were next gen.

I think the entire debate of whether the Nintendo Wii is "Next Generation" is pointless because it's current generation. Heck the Playstation 3 has been out for a year and the Xbox 360 is over two years old.

It just doesn't mean anything any more and it really dates an article about videogames.
