A sad fact of the world is that the US as a whole does not like Techno. I mean you can go and get it in a store but Fat Boy Slim and Orbital are not pushing Nsync and Britney of the charts. I started liking Moby when I first heard his music on the sound track to the 1992 Ralph Bakshi movie Cool World. It really is to bad that Techno is not more well received in the US considering this is one of it's birth places.
Moby was signed to Electra who did a great job at selling his music in the rest of the world but they just sat around with their thumb up their ass than try to push techno in the early 90s in the US market. I mean it was the time of Grunge and Rap not weird computer music.
Moby has allowed his songs to be used on sound tracks and commercials but he does not go and create new music just to embrace a product.
After he deal with Electra was up me moved to V2 and they realized that they couldn't make the US like techno but they could try to sell Moby as a "Rock Star"
America loves a "Rock Star" and when I say that I am not talking about rock and role but a music celebrity that we latch on to. Techno music has a long history of rejecting the whole "Rock Star" image and it has become trendy in the techno world to not have the artist in the videos.
Take The Prodigy their music is almost as old as Moby but it was when they started messing with the image and created a front man "Rock Star" image that they started to get on MTV and sell albums in the US.
It is the love and hate relationship that an artist has to contend with. As a commercial artist I am all to aware or the pressures of the all mighty dollar.
Moby is a Christian who makes music but he does not try to exploit his religious belief to make money. I mean you don't find his music in the new gospel section of the music store.
He is entitled to his own view just as much as the next guy. I am actually glad that he is a celebrity that will actually talk about the issues rather than trying to remain un controversial and blank as to not hamper his image and marketability.
I also believe that he doesn't own a car because he lives in New York and that would be insane.
It takes money to buy air time to get a song on the radio and MTV and if you ask me I think that he should stop letting Madison Ave. use his music because he does not need the exposure.
It is a dual edge that you have to sell out to be successful in the US but we don't like a sell out.

So the question is ... does one do art to be an artist or to be famous? Because not many people can have it both ways. Correct?
Some people are perfectly happy to "sell out" and do what people want so they can get money/fame/notoriety/chicks!
Yes I agree with you Jake. However it isnt that MOBY says he doesnt have a car....he said he refuses to get into one. You sure dont need one in Manhatten though. I think that MOBY should sell himself and put these Hollywood hacks away where they belong. I also think he should stop being political and just make some kickass music. I hate it when I hear music that i like in a commercial because it ruins it for me.
Thought..the world LOVES Robbie Williams except for the Americans.
So he gave up on them.
America has no clue who Robbie William is.. except me that is. Most people here think you are talking about Robin Williams the actor. It is not like we hate Robbie Williams we just don't have any exposure to him.
I think he must be a soccer player or something.
I know who Robbie Williams is and it isn't cause I know Jake. I disagree with you Jake. You don't have to sell out to be sucessful. There are lots of bands/artists/celebrities who don't sell out and although they may not be household names, they are by all means sucessful. Mindless SelfIndulgence is a prime example. They aren't mainstream radio fare, but everytime I go to a music store to buy their cd, it's usually sold out. They have a concert here in June or so, that they have already sold out. Success is not measured by whether or not you are played on every top 40 station across the country. I think if you have a fan base that supports you whether that's 5 people or 5 million, you're sucessful.
I THINK ROBBIE WILLIAMS IS NOT FAMOUS HERE BECAUSE HE DOESNT WANT TO BE FAMOUS IN AMERICA, HE WANT TO LIVE A QUIET LIVE IN AMERICA!!
No one in America likes Robbie Williams because he blows.
