Right now Microsoft is hosting WinHEC, the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference. They are showing off their plans and work on the next version of Windows AKA Windows Longhorn. Despite this conferance being pretty close to me geographically I don't see myself going because I don't have a press pass or a good reason to go but I do like to read and discuss the future of computing. Thanks to the Internet and good reporting one can find out about it even if you stayed home. At least Chris Pirillo got to go. He is a nice guy I met a few times at a blogger meetup.
Probably the biggest bombshell so far at this years WinHEC is that the DRM core of Longhorn is going to be scaled back from what was previously planned back when they were calling the entire thing Palladium. My displeasure of Palladium was one of the core reasons why I switched to Mac OSX. I don't regret it one bit.
One thing that hit me is the subconscious sexual imagery and terminology about Windows Longhorn. I know it is named after a bar at the base of Whistler Mountain in British Columbia but the very name is rather phallic. I mean why don't they call it Project Windows Huge Penis. Then the logo is supposed to be this steer but it ends up looking like a simplistic diagram of a uterus. But that is just my twisted view of Freudian aspects of corporate branding.
On that note I am counting down the days until this Saturday when I can install Mac OS Tiger on my iBook. It's GRRREAT!

Project Windows Huge Penis
*LOL*
Chin pokomon anyone?
I want a smaller G5, then I'm trying OS X again.
As a Gaijin who can speak some Nippongo I buseted a gut when I saw the South Park episode "ChinpokoMon"
AKA "Penis Monster"
Well They do have a G5 in the iMacs now. They are the all in one design that look like a big LCD monitor. It is a shame because I like the Desklamp iMac design. Starting Next week or probably right now they are probably shipping OSX 10.4 on all their Macs.
Is Tiger really necessary right now? Why not wait until some of the bugs get worked out? Seriously? There aren't even a whole lot of apps that even work right on it yet. $129 is just to much to pay for quicksilver and konfabulator.
Actually all of my apps except Roxio Popcorn work just fine on Tiger. Popcorn should be patched this weekend.
Tiger has been in Beta for a while and it pretty compatible with older Mac OSX software.
It is much more than just Konfabulator and Quicksilver I think Spotlight is well worth the cost and this is what my iBook is going to run for most of it's life so I don't think $130 is too much to have the latest and best Mac OS. I just spent 2k on a laptop why would I skimp on the OS?
Quicksilver IS spotlight essentially. If they released Spotlight as a seperate app, I garantee you wouldn't pay $130 for it.
I suppose I should look deeper into what Tiger offers, but it just seems like there isn't that much of a difference between tiger and panther. Seems like all they did was add apps or features like spotlight and dashboard. I'm not saying you should NOT but Tiger, I was just saying, that I would wait a bit. Till the bug are worked out. I don't think it has an added feature that is desperatly needed, and can't wait for. Thats all.
Quicksilver is an automation and scripting tool. While Spotlight is a metadata system wide search engine tool. I don't see how those are simular. If Quicksilver is like any part of Tiger it is Automator.
How do you feel about Windows Vista(since that's its actual name, though was most likely posted before the annoyncement)?
Yes, I am an M$ whore. Proud to be one.
