The Nintendo DS Lite is Very Handy in a Blackout
Today there was a strong wind storm and just as we returned to our home my girlfriend Kymberly remarked that she hoped the power did not go out. Just after she said that the power went out again.
So for the next six hours we hung out in the dark with candles and a log in the Franklin Stove. I read a book ( Starship Troopers ) by the window while the daylight lasted and then played my iPod and Nintendo DS Lite. Actually the DS came in handy when we wanted to light some candles and we found the matches by the bright light of the DS Lite. It also came quite handy when we had to use the now very dark bathroom. I made a pot of hot water on the kettle on top of the Franklin Stove and had we had some instant powered cider and hot chocolate and watched a DVD movie on my iBook.
It was quite cosy until the neighbors turned on their gas powered generator and then our quiet evening was replaced with the sound of blaring gasoline combustion engine. I was feeling a bit claustrophobic so I headed into town to do some lite shopping. I wanted to return a rented DVD but could not get it out of the DVD player without the power. At the store I got some replacement batteries for our flashlight, some glow-in-the-dark raver glow sticks, and a "treehugger" hand crank powered flashlight that delivers twenty minutes of light from one minute of cranking. Just as I was parking my car returning home the power came back on. I told Kymberly that I have a superstition that when the power is out if you leave and come back the power will be on. I know that is unscientific bogus but at least you don't feel like watching the paint dry in the dark.
I seriously recommend you keep your Nintendo DS Lite handy and charged for when your power goes out.
