The Martyrdom of Saint Valentine

a Valentines day card from Jim MorisonThere is not one holiday that annoys me more than Valentines day. First of all it is a tool of patriarchical oppression by making single people feel insecure and less important that couples. In fact the whole reason behind Valentines day is to make people feel bad about themselves and obligated to buy more cards and chocolate as gifts.

So today let us remember the martyrdom of Saint Valentine at the hands of Emperor Claudius || of Rome. His execution was around the Roman pagan feast of lovers so in a mad fit of historical inaccuracy the two events became entwined and exploited by commercialism.

I for one do not buy into the whole forced consumerism and yet more commercialization of a holiday. I am single by choice and I refuse to feel that I am any less of a worthy person because of it.

My mom sent me a box of chocolates and my step-mom mailed me a Starbucks gift certificate. So I was thinking about making my own card because I am too Goddamn creative to fork out the holiday toll to Halmark and American Greetings.

You see my step-mom is a fan of the Doors and I thought the whole concept of having the forces of consumerism have my moms send me cards of love were well Oedipus in nature

I am still romantic I am just romantic on my own terms. I like chocolate and roses I just don't like being guilted into buying them.

I have to agree with you on this one. I, myself, have a 'significant other' and still do not buy into the whole Valentine's Day crap. Why do I need a 'special' day to tell someone I love them? I don't. This holiday is another example of commercialism at it's best. Plain and simple.

Men have a gun to thier head this time of year. I mean really how much thought goes into buying some roses at twice the price and having some slack jawed lackey drop them off to your wife??!!
It is just stoopid but this holiday is TOTALLY pushed by WOMEN! Now I will agree it is a made-up holiday. I HATE Valentines day. My wife likes it though and i guess whatever makes her happy(getting roses) I have to tell you this though. I did an experiment one year to see if it was the act of recieving roses that she liked or if it was the act of recieving roses at the office that she liked (in front of all the other women). Can you guess what happened when i did not send them to her work to be placed on her desk? I was correct in my assumption that it was the ego trip that the woman gets to flaunt this in front of all the other women!!! There is no difference with a woman's ring. If a woman is very attractive she will almost always have a very large diamond ring on her finger that the pool boy did NOT give her. Most women will immediately brag and show it off if it is percieved that you may have glanced at it.

What the HELL is "Patriarchal oppression" though?
I mean I know what it means but how are married people oppressing anyone? If anything married people are the oppressed! **clicks on tv to watch sportscenter**

Well, duh, Petey! Everyone knows it's almost always about the shoving of the flowers in the other broads' faces! However, there are those of us who do not need the public displays to feel valued and loved. In fact, it's those private displays that really let you know who's lovin' ya! I do know chics that are way into the whole competitive ring thing. But usually the ring tends to be the thing that sparkles, rather than their personality.

Today is a great day to celebrate being single! Let's all play video games and watch porn and Godzilla movies. And eat bacon!

BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!BACON!!!! BACON!!!!!**burp**

WAIT! you have pie?

hehehehehe... Pete, you have discovered one of our secrets. It's the act of getting roses at the OFFICE that means the most... most in the way of showing up the other chics in the office. Yeah, I'll admit I've done that before - both times I told my husband to send me roses so I could make a specific person in the office jealous. And... It worked! (of course my husband despised these woman and loved the thought of making each of these shallow bitches jealous). but generally I don't need roses, etc. to know that someone cares for me. I'd rather just have a card or something from the heart. Or just something I like (fly a kite, go go-kart racing, see a movie), I don't measure a gift by it's monetary value... as a lot of women do.

And your right, it's NOT the married men who are opressing... If anything single men who are desperate to impress are making married men look bad. (I was a secretary for a decade so I did a lot of ordering of gifts for boss', so I think I can comment on a lot of men's buying habits). A Lot of married guys don't do much for Valentines but the ones who are dating usually go the whole 9 yards. And guys, that just makes a nasty cycle for all of you. Single girl get's huge arrangement, dinner out, fancy present & weekend away. Married woman gets nice card, maybe dinner out and a massage. Married woman mentions to hubby how single girl got so much. Married guy thinks "Damn! I didn't do enough." So next year married guy has to buy more. See where this is going? it's all the single men's fault that this 'holiday' has gotten so crazy. We women just enjoy the loot from the competition. ;o)

I don't really care for the holiday myself. But I like the Jim Morrison picture though.
