The Greater Cultural Impact of Monster Truck Madness
Tonight I was suckered into attending a monster truck motor show in the Tri-Cities. My brother wanted to go and had tickets so I went with him, my cousin and uncle.
I know the Romans used to like to gather and watch slaves and Christians being slaughtered and the Spanish like to watch bulls being stabbed and tortured so I guess monster trucks are culturally harmless. But I do have to wonder what this says about our culture as a whole to future sociologists.
And the Europeans say that we Americans do not have an advanced culture. Bah!

Did you ever play Monster Truck Madness for Win95? That game was cool.

Uh Jake...are you alright? I mean, monster trucks are really not a gauge of cultural awareness. Think of it this way...
Is Kill Bill a measure of our worth as a society? I sure frigging hope not. I believe it is referred to as "entertainment".
So what is the difference between bad cinema (kill bill), bad video games(GTA3), professional wrestling and the proliferation of bad TV?
Answer: nothing.
I have to say that I love watching anything being destroyed like this...especially cars being crushed under billy bob's giant truck!
In the same way you like playing WWF smackdown (but when you do it it has a sense of irony).
FEEL THE IRONY JAKE!!!! ENJOY THE IRONY!!!
Heh.

I was being sarcastically rhetorical. In retrospect it was a good time.

Damnit Jake! I was just trying to call you and you didn't answer. I know it was a good time....you should be thankfull (i know you are) that you got to spend time with your family this season. I sure am glad that I did. Hey, I am having a party soon at my house with a bunch of people from Mandy's work...wanna come over? I think it would be a good time...NO ASSAULT RIFLES JAKE! I know how you like to get your "groove on" with the latest AR-15 modification kit. Just kidding but still it might be fun and you could rescue me from the wierdos my wife works with.....truly odd people.

I do not believe that the entertainment is a terribly good way to describe a society. The opinions are clearly biased, for example I am currently listening to Bethoven, this does not make me any "better" than those who listen to ramstein or kid rock. And i do like the other types of music as whell (i am not a stuck up snob about it). Some of the most violent people I know were into classical music which debunks that idea. Next time you want to judge someoen on what they like to do for entertainment just remember that in general it all has ist high points and low points but in the end it is all just personal prefference.

You know, it was during my first trip to Seattle that I came face-to-face with the Monster Trucks. My friends and I were stumbling drunk through Pioneer Square a couple days after New Year's in '99. Hellafied amounts of people were on foot, headed south, but we didn't know what was up.
A carriage driver pulled alongside us and asked if we were going to see the Monster Trucks.
"The _what_? Where?!"
"The Kingdome," he replied, at which point Ramesh and I looked at each other and laughed like fools, because we'd been giddily talking about Monster Trucks in the recent past.
So we jumped in, got dropped off, and paid our money to watch Gravedigger and the lot jump over things, break axles, get rolled and otherwise break down. This cycle was broken up by some purported feud on wheels between guys on ATVs or something. The novelty wore off after the first hour or so.
But I did get a t-shirt. A couple months later I was walking through the streetside Indian Market in Santa Fe. A Native jewelrymaker whose pieces I was checking out pointed at me and, I thought, asked me where I got what I had on. I thought she meant the turquoise stone I wore around my neck.
"No, no, where'd you see the Monster Trucks?"

Monster Trucks kick ass!!! I think my favorite trucks would have to be rampage, grave digger of course, and snake bite....old (kinda) but sweet.
