Stupid Movable Type Tricks Pt1
I have been messing around with two nifty Movable Type tricks and I thought I would pass it on.
I am weaning myself off my PDA and onto my laptop but I was missing the To Do list on the PDA.
So I made a quick alternative using Movable Type.
I just created a new entry and set the Post status to "Draft" so that it will not be published to the web.
Then I put in my list of things to do and save it.
I made a bookmark of that one post in the MT CMS environment. Then I moved it to my Mozilla Firebird Personal Tool Bar folder for easy access.
Now I an access this list on any computer connected to the net and is totally private and instantly edited.
And for my next trick is the easily updated "Did You Know side bar.
I did this by creating a new category called "did_you_know". Then I created a new post using this category and edited the publish date so that it would be pushed back deep within my archives.
Then I made a new MT Entries tag and put it just to that category.
‹div class="sidetitle"›Did you know?‹/div›
‹div class="side"›
‹MTEntries category="Did_you_know"›
‹$MTEntryBody$›
‹/MTEntries›
The main content is posted on the main page and the archive page is the just the extended section of the entry.
I made a bookmark to that one post in MT.
Instead of creating a mini blog I was able to create the same effect just by editing one post every time I want to update the Did You Know content in the side bar.
MT is actually a very powerful CMS (Content Management System) and can do a lot more than just making an online journal or magazine.

i agree completely and am planning a new site (oy vey, like i need another) that will utilize MT, but not in the traditional sense/format (and no, i ain't tellin'...at least not yet)...but seeing as i'm still futzing w/the stupid style sheet, it might be a few months...at least...:) i really like your ideas, Jake! :D esp. the "did_you_know" thing...:)
