Sony Removed Featured from The PSX
Sony has been cutting features out of the PSX.
Update: The PSX is the name of Sony of Japan's new Tivo like hard disk TV recorder that has a DVD burner and can play Playstation 2 games. It is also an old development name for the first Playstation before it came out.
Some are understandable but some are surreal.
The device will no longer read CD-R and DVD+RW discs.
MP3 file playback has been removed but digital music playback is still there using the Sony ATRAC format. Much like my Minidisc player.
Now here is the weird part. They took off the Ethernet broadband Internet port so you can not hook it up to the Internet for online Playstation2 games or for Sony's Japanese PlayStation Broadband service. My only guess is that there were issues with the PSX OS but that is no excuse. So the $200 PS2 can play games online but the PSX can not. That sucks.
Now here is a kick in the teeth. The 250GB HD version will be roughly $760 and the 160GB HD version will be roughly $600. That is about the cost of the 3DO when it first came out. The price is a good deal compared to high end HD DVD TV Recorders. I doubt that this will be marketed to the same Playstation2 crowd that picks up discounted games.
Honestly I do not consider the PSX a video game system but a media device that can also play video games. If you do consider it a video game system it is one of the most expensive game systems ever. I am getting skeptical if we will ever see it in the US. And if we do see it in the US it will be available in the high end video store. I doubt we will see the PSX on shelf in your local Wal-Mart. Who knows we might still see the PSX released in the US but I doubt that it will take the market position of the PS2.

But what the heck sort of media device cannot play/utilize widely-used formats like MP3s, CD-Rs, and GIF and TIFF images? ;) (ironically, it can't even support Sony's own Cybershot format for digital movies, either, nor does it have antenna output)

Well I don't think they want to be seen as enabling audio piracy but they also want to promote ATRAC.
Honestly I do not have a lot of TIFF and GIF images. Most of my porn is in JPG. I mean images... yeah.
It is questionable the direction they want the device to take.

did I missed something here?? The PSX (PS1) could play DVD or even play MP3 or had internet connection? My old 1997'er PSX cannot (of course).

It's my understanding that they didn't remove the ethernet port, just the compatibility with the PS2's BB network in Japan.
...and that's something that can be added later with a software update. It still uses the ethernet connection for tv listings.
Another thing they downgraded was the DVD burning speed. It was originally supposed to be 24x, which would have been *stupid* fast, and actually, the fastest DVD burner available. They dropped it down to a much more reasonable 12x.

As for the name, don't forget that the original PlayStation never was officially called the PSX. That was just the codename during its development, which filtered out into the industry after its release.
I think it was pretty stupid to call this ubersystem the PSX, but who cares, really. :)

I've always felt that the PSX is Sony's answer to TiVo (and much like everyone else, I think it's a mistake and very misleading to call it the "PSX"). If Sony is marketing this as a multimedia device, it's odd that they're taking some key multimedia features out. But hey, this is a Sony product and Sony likes to be in control.
Hey, wasn't the NeoGeo about $700 too?

The NeoGeo was $650 in the early 90s when it first came out and the 3DO was $700. The thing is that Sony actually has a Tivo on the market.

Interesting developments... I consider the PSX an experiment with cross media devices on Sony's part. I don't think they expect to dominate the market with this particular unit but it gives them a chance to test the waters with a living room 'convergence device'. I'm sure they'll do well enough with it, in Japan in particular, to help them iron out the kinks for future products.

Well if they did bring it out it would sell to the high end video crowd but it would not replace the PS2 or Xbox in the video game isle.
