Seattle Web Logger Meetup July 2k3
Tonight I attended the Seattle Weblog Meetup. Meetup.com is a truly remarkable dotcom. They allow groups of people who have previously not met in real life to get together and organize. The Weblog Meetup is just a group of weblog authors in the Seattle area. The most well know is the Meetup for Dean group. This is a truly grass roots political group and has been a major force in the Dean Presidential campaign. They have organized and been a major part of the fund raising efforts for Howard Dean. The Dean campaign has used Weblogs and Meetup like no one has before and it is going to be studied and copied by campaigns to come. Dean has been attracting disenfranchised non voters and getting them involved in national politics. That is good but I do not think that Dean can get the nomination away from Senator John Kerry. There is nationally 7,000 registered for the Meetup for Kerry but there is over 62,000 registered for Dean. It has been an impressive alternative to having massive expensive fund raising events that the average voter can not afford. But a plethora of small donations can add up to the same amount as a more exclusionary larger fund raiser rallies. But the weblog Meetup is not political but is just a gathering of like minded nerds.
It is a bit strange meeting weblog authors in person because they can either be introverted and use their website as a way of expression. Then there is weblog authors like myself who are the same in person as they are in digital print.
In attendance was.

Update: Later on the ferry ride home across the Puget Sound I met a girl names Amanda who just started going to the same art college that I did. She had a really cute Mini-mouse and I must have one for myself.

I'm jealous of you guys.
I would luv to do something like that. However, the closest meetup is 7 hours drive and it always seems to be cancelled due to lack of numbers.

tyd.
Here is what i dont understand. There is NO wirk in Seattle anymore in graphic design for the entry level people. How does the SAI manage to stay open? I mean dont you guys pump out 150 students every 6 months or something like that? How do these young artists end up finding work? Do most of them leave the state or what?

Peter it is bad but not impossible. I mean graduated from there five years ago and I have been paying my rent consitantly for the past five years. It has not been easy but it is possible. Amanda and Tyd are going to graduate in two years so hopefully things will be better by then.
