Ruminations on the Tablet PC
Recently I got to mess around with a Tablet PC. There are some at work and a Microsoft Blogger brought one to the last Seattle Weblog Meet Up. I find them fascinating in a George Jetson / William Gibson fetish sort of way.
I am no stranger to pen based computing. In fact I had purchased my first Wacom back in Junior High to use with Painter 1.0 and Photoshop 2.0 on my old Mac LC. The ones I were really impressed with was the Fujitsu machines and they were fun to hold and had a great balance to them. At the electronics store I tried the Toshiba Hybrid Tablet/Notebook but I was not impressed by the feel of it. I guess if I had a lot of text to enter I would just connect a USB keyboard. A Bluetooth wireless keyboard would be neat to use with a Tablet PC. There is even a Linux for Tablet PC and I am surprised that Apple has not made one.
They are really interesting and I will consider getting one when I buy a new notebook in a couple years. Also I saw that they store had a minor upgrade to the eMachine notebook in. These are not even on their website yet. The eMachine m5310 is the same as my m5305 but it is at 2.4 Ghz, a $1,100 price tag and built in 801.11-G WiFi. Same graphics chip.
I can't wait to see what notebooks are going to be like in two or three years. I guess when I upgrade to a new notebook I will turn this one into a web server.
