Review : Wairoware Touched! for Nintendo DS

WarioWare Touched!Nintendo has just released their first major name double A game for the Nintendo DS since the system's launch. Wairoware Touched! is a hell of a fun time. This is the true sequel for Warioware for the Gameboy Advance.

The Warioware Gamecube game was just a re-interpretation of the Gameboy Advance game with a multiplayer aspect but this is a true sequel with hundreds of all new mini-games designed just for the Nintendo DS touch screen and pen.

The basic premise of the game has not really changed. It is a surreal collection of small minigames thrown at the player in a random order and you have to figure out the game in a matter of seconds and preform the task or take a hit. But rather than using the game pad and buttons this is an entirely pen based game and the creativity of Nintendo's designers and programmers really show off.

If you think about it we have had these four directions of gamepads, some buttons, mice, keyboards, light guns, dance pads and analog joysticks but this is right up there with Sega's XY/XX Feel the Magic as a totally pen and touch pad based game. It is pretty cool that a hundred and fifty dolor Nintendo game can deliver 3d graphics and advanced analog pen based interaction that is beyond the Pocket PC, Tablet PC and Palm OS platforms.

There is no multi-player games that use the wireless networking features of the DS but there is a bunch of unlockable minigames and toys that two people can use with the same Nintendo DS unit. I guess the real reason why this game works is that it does not take it self to seriously and it tried to be simple and fun before anything else. This take advantage of the two screens on most of the games and it delivers a game play experience that is not easily captured by a screen shot of video clip. This is one of those simple but totally fun video games that can be enjoyed by players ages five to fifty (or older but that is just a phrase).

If you did not like the first Warioware game then you would probably not get this one. This is a perfect example of the type of new innovative game play interactions that only the Nintendo DS can deliver. I sincerely hope that this is a good example of the unique fun games that we can expect from the Nintendo DS platform.

This was the first game I got with my DS. It's a great introduction for people to use the touch screen with, everyone who gets a DS now should pick this game up, along with another game with more substance.
