Review : The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers Special Extended Edition DVD
Tuesday was the international release of The Two Towers Special Extended Edition DVD. I have reviewed the theatrical version of the film DVD, The Video game based on the movie and the actual freaking movie when I saw it in the theaters.
This is a wonderful follow up to the extended edition DVD of the Fellowship of the Ring. It is a four disc DVD set that should probably take you a week to get through all the good stuff that is crammed on these quad silver video platters. I picked it up at my local target for $25 and that is quite a good deal if you ask me. I am sure that there are going to be people who are going to gripe again about a second DVD edition of the same movie but to them I just have to say that no one put a gun to their head to buy the first DVD of the film.
There are loads of scenes that were really good but were chopped out and edited down to the bare essentials to tell the story in the theatrical version of the movie but they create a broader tapestry of cinematic bliss in the slower pace crafted detail of the extended edition. There are story elements and back story that cover the whys and hows of the story.
I don't think the extended editions were put together to make even more money but to present a version of the story that is closer to Tolkein's and Jackson's interpretation of the story.
The notable differences between the two version is an opening with the elven rope, longer scenes with Golem, getting closer look at the people of Rohan and the death of the prince, much more Tree Beard, wonderful outdoor cinematic shots, and the most blatant Hobbit pipeweed pot smoking scene.
There are loads of documentaries about the creation of the movie in all parts of the production. The discussions with the writers were a good look at why the changes were made to the film story from the book story. The best books usually do not make the best films but there were some changes that I see that they really need to make a better movie that if they just shot the book page for page.
I don't recommend watching the whole two extended editions of the movie side by side without taking any bathroom breaks. It is sure to burst the most robust of bladders.
I am sure that George Lucas is probably going to watch Peter Jackson's work knowing that he is as good a director that he ever was and has decades of work ahead of him.
This really has gotten me stoked to go see The Lord of the Rings : Return of The King theatrical edition but in a way I have enjoyed this movies so much that I am regretting having it end. I guess I have around a month to wait to see the last movie and another year until the Extended Edition DVD of Return of the King.
I freaking love this movie and it is a slap in the face that Hollywood gave the Oscar to Chicago instead of The Two Towers.
Here is to hoping that Peter Jackson considers making The Hobbit when he is done with his King Kong movie.

I'm looking forward to Eva. The directors cut DVD set of the second half of the series has a 25 min interview with Richard Taylor about the movie.
And Weta has the 40th and 44th most powerful supercomputers in the world.
