Review : The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers on DVD Theatrical 2 Disc Edition
Last night when I was at Target I enjoyed one of their hot dogs and with a bit of mental deliberation I purchased a copy of The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers on DVD theatrical 2 disc release.
Now the hard core nerds are saying to themselves why would I want to do this? I intended on seeing a movie that night but there were no good flicks at the cinema that I have not seen. It has gotten to the point where you have to pay eight bucks at the movie theater to get in and then four bucks for popcorn. The theatrical DVD of the Two Towers was on sale for fifteen bucks with a coupon for a two liter bottle of 7-Up pop. So I got a bag of microwave popcorn a bottle of A & W root beer and a DVD for a little bit more than the cost of a movie at the theaters.
Now I have every intention on getting the Two Towers Extended edition when it ships in November and I will give my copy of the theatrical edition to my folks or donate it to my local library. Besides Sean Astin needs the money. The royalty checks from The Goonies do not pay like they once did.
The DVD looks just as good as the movie and is enhanced for widescreens so it is full frame in letterbox on my notebook. Crank the external up the speakers and pop some popcorn and that is a hell of a good weeknight. The movie is just as good as it was in the theater but now you can pause it to go take a leak. Movies have gotten expensive and DVDs have gotten cheaper and so the DVD versions are a major part of the movie business. But for those of you who are pissed that they are releasing two version of the same movie I just say that you should calm down and no one is forcing you to buy any version of the flick.
I saw that the New Zealand tourism board is using the movies to promote tourism in the land of the Kiwis. I tell you that if I found a good job in Wellington I would move there and never look back.
There is some good made for TV and web documentaries on the making of this movie and a long look at the Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King due out this December. I still have about three months to finish re-reading the trilogy before the last movie comes out and the first two movies are re-released in the theaters.

I know that Fox built that multi-billion dollar movie studio over in Australia and Weta Digital has matured into a full scale effects company.
And you can actually film mountains and open land in New Zealand without coming across yuppie condos everywhere. You can't do that in the US anymore.
I still remember my parents taking me to go see "The Piano". Don't forget Babe and I still love Young Einstein shot over in Tasmania.

I don't understand all the hoo-ha about the two DVD versions. It was announced far ahead of time that there would be two, so it's not like it was sprung on us, as DVD companies so often do. And the two versions make sense - one for casual fans who just want a copy of the movie, one for devoted fans who want the deleted scenes and appendixes.
I also don't understand why those who plan on buying the extended edition feel the need to apologize for purchasing the two disc version. Maybe you're a film fan and want to compare the different edits. Maybe you're really keen on special features (in my opinion, the ROTK preview and the featurette with Merry & Pippin bumbling around Wellington are worth the $15). Or maybe you just can't wait three more months to see the film again. I see no shame there.
