Tenchu Stealth Assassins is one of the best PSOne games out there and it is one of those rare games that proves that there is something to this 3d graphics thing. This game is published by Activision but was made by a small Japanese game company who knew what they were doing.
In this game you play the Ninjas Rikimaru or Ayame of the Gohda Ninja clan who is hired to right the various wrongs of the land.
The game is done in a 3d over the shoulder perspective that can easily switch to first person to look around corners and use weapons. The environments are the real stars with maze of houses, gardens, forests, and castles in Shogunate Japan.
But let me make one thing crystal clear, stealth is the name of the game. Actually the name of the game is Tenchu but I digress. Stealth is very important to this game. When you sneak up on a bad guy un-detected you get to do a one hit kill in a really cool cut seen of you lobbing of the unwitting henchman's head or cutting his guts open.
Blood flows freely and realistic sound effects and movie cut scenes make no attempt to hide the brutality of the hard core old school ninja action. Think Red shirts on Star Trek away teams.
I like the campy voice over that has a semi twisted since dark humor. All the actors sound like they were dubbed by extras in a Sonny Chiba movie. I think it is intentional and as Martha says it is a Good Thing.
The music is kick ass classical guitar and a fusion of Japanese and modern western music.
This game really takes advantage of a 3d environment to create a deep rich environment that is truly 3d not just 2d game play done in polygons. Sure the PSOne is not the most powerful system on the market but the graphics are very well done and even are impressive to those PS2 homies and Xbox spoiled 3d graphics brats. In fact a third Tenchu game just came out on the PS2. I have been enjoying Tenchu : Wrath of Heavens but that is a different review.
This game has over 500% the daily USDA suggested amount of Ninja action. It is in the Playstation Greatest hits collection can be found new for $15.
Remember Ninjas hate pirates. These Ninjas can totally flip out and kill you with out even thinking about it.
Hey Jake did you get Tenchu 3: Wrath of Heaven? I haven't played it yet but I heard it basically the first game but with everything bigger and better. I want to try co-op too.
Yes I do have Tenchu3 and Yes it does kick so much ass. I woulnd say it is just like the first game but they left the good things in place and added on from there. My only complaint with Tenchu 3 is that you can't move dead bodies.
