Review : Tenchu Shinobi Taizen! for PSP Import

psp-tenchu-shinobe-jap.jpgAbout two weeks ago I said damn the torpedoes and imported Tenchu : Shinobi Taizen for PSP by K2 games. I have loved the Tenchu games for PSOne and PSTwo and I even have the Xbox game so I have to wonder why they dropped the ball and have not brought out the Tenchu PSP game to the US. Since I know how the game is played and I am not afraid of Ninjas speaking in untranslated Japanese I had to have this game. Not only are ninjas the keepers of the real ultimate power they can flip out and kill you at any moment. While there is no english of any kind in the game you can pretty much get through the game just like you can on any other Tenchu game. Hopefully there will be more GameFaqs on this game in time. This game is all about stealth and totally killing punk ass guards silently suddenly and frequently.

The characters, and animations look awesome however the environments looks like they are straight out of an old PSOne game and are quite blocky and are not as lush or detailed as the other Tenchu games. There is also a really show drawing distance and the overall engine felt like it was much closer to the old PSOne games than the lush eye candy of Tenchu on PS2. I hope they make a sequel for PSP where they really push the hardware further. I just thought that they could have pushed the PSP much harder and gotten better environments.

That being said it is a pretty good port to the PSP and the game play rocks. The music and sound effects are straight out of the other games and in fact they were almost directly lifted from the other games.

It looks like it has a mission editor and wireless co-op and competitive game play.

I hope the Western publishers get off their ass and bring this game out in English because Lord knows the PSP needs more kick ass Ninja games and less crappy UMD movies taking up shelf space. I would only recommend importing this if you are hard core and not afraid of totally untranslated Japanese and ninjas flipping out and totally wasting people with their real ultimate ninja skills.

Do you take your own screenshots with the PSP? How does that work?

I have to admit, having a portable Tenchu game must be pretty sweet.

I found that screen shot on the Lik-Sang website.
