Review : Super Nintendo Advantage

The Super Nintendo Advantage JoystickNext on Joystick Week:

The Super Nintendo Advantage is the official follow up the Classic NES Advantage. While the first was made my Nintendo this one is licensed by Nintendo but made by Japanese controller maker ASCII ware.

Super Nintendos And Super FamicomsThe look of this joystick is a bit crazy. I mean I know they wanted it to look like the Super Nintendo but DAMN. The purple switches the look like the SNES power switches don't do a damn thing. I actually have one of the smaller redesigned SNES as well as a Super Famicom and the original boxy design. I mean the boxy SNES is visually one of the worse systems designs out there and is a joke compared to the slick Super Famicom. I just wish that they made the stick to look like the good designed version of the system.

The stick really works well and is a bit bigger than the NES version and the unit it self is almost twice the size of the NES version.

The Slow motion button really click and holds down well and the variable Slow motion slider is slick. All the buttons have variable turbo speed sliders and the Turbo switches can be locked so you don't even have to press the button. now I don't use these to play but it is spiffy to know that I have the option.

The buttons work well and don't take much effort to press and have a good spring to them for really fast game play. Color coding them like the Super Famicom was nifty. I wish that they kept the color coding on the standard controller like they did in Japan.

Ok here is the problem. The weird button layout. It is quite possible to play Street Fighter 2 with this stick but you have to be creative with the button assignments and they didn't follow the traditional Capcom style six buttons in with three in two rows design. Occasionally it is possible to get "L" Confused with X or B.

It is not that rare and they do have some on EBay but had a lot more joysticks on the market but all in all even with the non standard button layout The Super Nintendo Advantage is the best arcade stick for the SNES and it makes action and arcade game come alive on the SNES.

Games that benefit from this: Super Metroid, Street Fighter 2 and clones, Just about any shooter or fighting game on the SNES and there is quite a lot of them.

I need to play more SNES games.

HI,

Do you know if a NTSC Super Advantage Joystick has the same connector and is compatible with a PAL system unit ? Meaning if i brought one that was NTSC would it work on a PAL system ?

This would work well with Final Fantasy III. Sabin's Blitzes are near impossible with the control pad.
