Review : Super Mario Bros. for Wii Virtual Console
Ah What can be said about Super Mario Bros. for the NES? To call it a classic is an understatement. To call it influential is a gross understatement. Put simply it is probably the greatest Nintendo game of all time and absolutely everybody with a Wii should download this game first. It is the platform action game to influence all platform action games. Since it came out in 1985 it has been included with most 8-bit Nintendo systems and despite it being one of the most well played games it still is not overplayed.
The game play is everything and it never gets old. The graphics are great for the date and the sounds will stick in your head long after you quit playing. I'll find myself humming the Super Mario Bros. rag time jazz theme whenever.
I think it is a good deal at 500 Wii Points. It is probably the best Shigeru Miyamoto game ever made and that is a pretty high standard next to Donkey Kong, Zelda and Metroid. This is a perfect Super Mario Bros. experience and you can play it with the Wiimote held sideways but the Classic Controller just feels right.
They need to release Super Mario Bros. 2 from the Nintendo Famicom Disk Drive (also known as the Lost Levels), Super Mario Bros 2 USA (remade Doki Doki Panic) and Super Mario Bros 3. for the Virtual Console. There are plenty of gamers that would put SMB 3 above Super Mario Bros. but if it were not for this game Mario 3 would never have been made. And Yes I do think there are mild drug references but the same could be said about Alice in Wonderland. Dude you light the fire flower and it gives you super powers! Awesome!
I can't imagine how many times I have played through it racing through the Mushroom Kingdom and I'll probably play it over and over again and rescue the Princess countless more times. If you haven't played it in a decade you should get it. If you never have played it you should get it and if you can save the Princess blindfolded you would be hard pressed to not want to have a copy of Super Mario Bros. on your Wii.
