Review : Suntory Boss Coffee : Five Types

Selection of Japanese CoffeesThis is the first batch of my guide to Japanese canned coffee. Five down and twelve to go.

Some of this review is lifted from my review of Boss Coffee Cafe Au Lait but I am allowed to rip myself off.

I first off want to say that I love Boss Coffee by Suntory. They ship in these cool thick metal 7oz.cans that are roughly the same size as a Starbucks DoubleShot except thicker. The Japanese seem to love the whole mini can concept. Energy drinks and other Japanese beverage oddities ship in these little cans.

Boss Coffee Pipe Guy LogoOne of the coolest thing about this is the Boss Logo guy, He looks like Stalin with the mustache, squint and pipe. Not to mention the metal can and deep red color scheme.

But on to the actual coffee. It provides a good caffeine but I doubt that it will give you a heart attack. you can get it from Uwajimaya for about a $1.25 and it goes for 100 Yen in Japan. It is served cold but I bet you can find it in a warmed vending machine in Japan and it would not be too bad at room temp. Not bad when you think that they are about half the price of a Starbucks DoubleShot or a third of a normal latte.

Suntory Boss Coffee Cafe Au Lait
The first one that I tried. It is super sweet, not to acidic and is very smooth with a very strong coffee taste. This would be the closest one to an iced latte with a syrup flavoring.

Suntory Boss Coffee Dark Black.
This stuff is pure dark coffee no cream no sugar. It is not that bad, not watery and not bitter. they really controlled the PH to a good level and I am blown away that it is not bitter or killing my stomach. This is good and I normally can't stand plain cold coffee. No calories and no pesky nutrients. Just pure cold caffeine that is not two acidic. I know it sounds gross but it was actually good.

Suntory Boss Coffee Mocha Brazil
Not super sweet. Just a hint of coco not overpowering sugar and chocolate. Just a bit of milk instead of a heavy cream.

Suntory Boss Coffee Fine Roast
Lightly creamed. Quite sweet and not bitter. A very good very average taste. It is the medium flavor of all the Boss Coffee brews.

Suntory Boss Coffee Neo Seven
Sweet as hell and super thick creamed. This is the teeth enamel killer heart attack giver of the family.

Boss Coffee also has a rather spiffy Flash website and some catchy jingles that they use on their TV commercials in Japan. Everyone of them ends with the pitch person singing:

"I can't live with out you."

Very appropriate for a coffee product.

He does kinda look like Stalin but he also kind of looks like Groucho Marx or a really aged Bob Dobbs. Also maybe the famous 1950s jazz artist Harry James.

Well he does play sax on The Mocha can. I don't know exactly why but I am reminded of Co. Sanders of KFC. I guess it is cool to have an abstract cartoon figure as a a part of an identity at a product that is not aimed at kids. Spuds McKenzie The Labots Blue Bear and Carrot Top would be examples. But this guy is twenty time cooler than them.

No way!! This guy totally looks like Clark Gable. Oh yeah....You see it!

Posted by: puunum at February 19, 2003 3:35 PM

will you bring a can of one of these to the meetup?

carrot top is a piece of poo disguised as a person, i didn't think i would ever see the day that you mentioned him on here.

I am in Japan right now - I am very enamoured of Boss-san. I think the Stalin likeness is a bit cruel - he doesn`t look like the kind of bloke who would disappear a few thousand comrades. I`m leaning towards Clark Gable - or possibly the chap from the Thin Man films, who`s name escapes me right now...

It sort of reminds me of Col. Sanders of KFC. It is an iconic cartoon but there is a little bit of a Big Brother quality to him but in a nice way.

Wow in Japan. You lucky girl

This logo is fantastic! I think he looks like a wise uncle and I love the way they never change his expression just stick things in front/to his face.

Oh, The coffee is nice too.

My boyfriend and I are both studying abroad in Japan right now and we have a long ongoing argument about whether the Boss looks like a visionary businessman type, or a Columbian druglord.

Neo Seven is my favorite type, although gotta point out that you missed a couple that are sometimes available in the U.S. (maybe not at your local store though, finding Boss at all is a good trick) and also Japan has a few types that don't wander Stateside. Calorie Off is one, I haven't tried it at all. Intermission is mild and sweet, with a medium amount of milk in it, and On Business is a bit stronger and a little lighter on the milk. Mount Cafe, I'm not sure, it seems to be Hokkaidou-only though. Hokkaidou Milk coffee is also Hokkaidou-only, and made with Hokkaidou-produced milk (which is ridiculously high quality and doesn't even taste the same as standard milk, I drink it all the time since I'm living in Sapporo), and comes in a nice tall can so you get more bang for your buck. And their newest one, My Road, comes in a tall can too, and is very like Neo Seven, just a teensy bit less sweet and about the same amount of cream. And it's got the Boss on it next to an old car, wearing slacks and a leather jacket, and exactly the same pipe and expression as always so it's pretty funny.

o_o; I talked too long about it...you'd think I was addicted or something...

I've had difficulty searching out this topic (various kinds of canned coffee) for someone who is about to take her first trip to Japan.
Thanks, I'm going to Email the links to your article. I'm looking for similar discriptions for other brands too.
Arigatou!

Boss coffee is cool I collect the cans.
I have all of the available types from Japan because I visit the country a lot.
My wife is Japanese so If I see a new can they get it for me and I pick it up on mu next trip.
The Boss logo is cool Kind of like a retro boss but a cool person.I think Boss looks trustworthy and the kind of person you would like to be in charge.Suntory have a great product and they should market it world wide especially in the state.
The japanese web site is cool and i have a boss coffee screensaver downloaded from that site.
I also plan to make some Andy Warhol style art
using the red and silver boss cans for an art exhibition.

So I was sipping my can of "Calorie Off (BITTER) Boss Coffee" and wondering if anyone had info on it. Why is it "bitter" since it has cream and sugar in it? Googling.... reveals this site as #1 hit. :)

So here's a data point to add to the collection. "Calorie Off (BITTER)" does indeed have cream and sugar, but very little of either. The initial taste is just like Pokka or other Japanese canned coffees. There is, however, a bitter aftertaste which is usually not present in other Boss editions. What IS this "bitter" variant? Extra caffiene? I have no idea... not my favorite Boss so far.

Great site. :)

I have not tried that flavor yet. It is rather hit and miss when my Japanese food store gets BOSS coffe e in. I have to take what I can get.

Hey, I just got back from Tokyo 2 days ago and I enjoyed the Boss during my stay. You can find them warmed in Vending machines. It kinda shocked me when I didn't realize it said hot, and I went to grab it out of the machine and burned my hand lol. My favorite one was Cafe Au Lait. I didn't really get to try the others. They had a flavor that had just come out while I was there. It was called Rainbow Blend. Stupid me, I didn't try it. But how I came across this site was I was looking for a way to get this stuff shipped to my house, because frankly.... I don't know how I'm gonna live with out it lol.

And it's funny you said he looked like Stalin, cuz that was the first thing my boyfriend said when he saw it.

Are you insane? Dark black is like drinking the last watery dregs from the coffeepot of a friend who buys Folger's instant.

I've also been collecting the cans. I started drinking coffee during a semester abroad there when I tried a mocha Brazil. That was in 2003, and ever since then I've tried every boss coffee I've encountered.

I actually just built a set of shelves to hold my collection! It's only 20 cans, but I've kept it with me through a couple moves.

Great reviews. Did anyone ever find out how I can get this product shipped to my home in Texas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to drop me an email line if you should find anything, or post here.

Thanks again,
Brad

To answer my own question, I've found a woman in Japan who ships Boss coffee to the US. She is very responsive to emails and is very friendly to boot. Her website follows. Drop me an email if you use her service.

I've been wanting more of this stuff ever since I picked up a couple at the Japanese market on a whim. I think I'm going to go back to Seattle and buy it by the case.

I need to find a web site to Boss Coffee! I have to have more.

To update everyone:

It seems Export Japan is exporting boss coffee by the 18 can case directly from Tokyo.

The good news is: a case of 18 will cost roughly $38, which equates to just a little over $2 a can.

Their auctions can be found on ebay by searching for 'boss coffee'

Cheers

only tried the trippy 'rainbow blend' from BOSS. i think they put some LSD in that shit, i felt like i was tripping. in any case, dont let the tiny can fool you, its easily as strong as about 3 mr brown's combined. which makes sense considering it costs 3x as much... definitely one to dilute with a tall container of ice.. not bad, but i think brown is still my fave :)

huge fan of the super blend boss coffee, the one that comes in a dark blue can and is piping hot from a vending machine in winter... there's pic and review here: http://dorinku.com/2007/11/suntory-boss-coffee-super-blend.html

This may seem like an odd request but Im looking for the older cans of Boss Coffee. I'd like to ad them to my growing Boss Collection. If anyone has some of the older cans laying around, I'll buy them off you. e-mail me at maruiman86@yahoo.com . Thanks!
