Review : Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
As just about every red blooded American nerd can tell you as of Tuesday this week in 2004 George Lucas's Star Wars Trilogy is now available on DVD.
Now this is the case of joy and apprehension in nerds everywhere. You see this is not the original theatrical versions nor the digitally remastered Special Editions that came out in 1997 but a new tweaked and remastered 2004 DVD edition of George Lucas's epic. You know what. I am totally OK with him going back and change the things that have been bugging him about the movies. You know why because he is George "The Force" Lucas and ultimately it is his movies. I mean I know that Star Wars belongs to us all but since he spent the countless days and years working on these films it is up to him to decide what is going in and not going in to Star Wars. I know I know that it sucks that Greedo is now shooting at Han Solo first but if you really have a big issue with it go get your own digital video editing system and splice the movies together how you want to or just go shoot your own Star Wars movie with your friends. That is exactly what a young George Lucas would do. Hell that is pretty much what he did do.
All three of the movies look wonderful on DVD. George and associates have gotten around to making some good commentary tracks but the fourth disk is what will really get the attention. It is full of a full length documentary movie about the creation of these films from film school to DVD as well as other shorter documentaries about the effect that George Lucas has had on other film makers like Peter Jackson. The Episode III Revenge of the Sith content was pretty weak and it only covered the creation of the new Darth Vader suit.
That being said there is no mention of Jar Jar Binks on the DVD set and this set must be purchased as soon as possible for any respectable nerd consumer. If you even think about buying the full screen version on DVD you deserve to be taken out to Begger's Canon and shot like the scruffy looking wamprat that you are. Sure it would be cool to see Lucasfilm release a DVD set of the original theatrical cuts but there is no reason to put off adding this set to your film library. Go now you know what you must do.
( Please dear God do not let George Lucas screw up Episode III )
And may the force be with you... Always.

Oh yeah go see THX-1138

/me too
Ep. I was lame.
Ep. II was better (but not that much better).

I guess I'm one of the few people who don't have any problems with EPs 1 and 2.

Ep I was OK but my major objection is that any time the kid they got to play Anakin spoke the illusion was ruined for me.
Ep II was good but I did not buy Amidala falling in love with Hayden, he played Anakin too much as a moody punk.
As to Lucas altering the first trilogy, I agree with Jake, they are his movies, he can do with them as he will. Remember, Lucas was under the gun when he mad "A New Hope" to finish filming within a week when he still had a large amount of filming to do. If he wants to go back now in his leisure and improve it, fine. That's the capitalist way/

I don't know. I, honestly, was perfectly fine with there only being Episodes IV, V, and VI. I didn't mind Episode I, although I thought it could be better in some respects. But Episode II was a complete disappointment for me. The only part of the movie that was worth it for me was the fighting scene with Yoda. That five minutes was worth the $8 I spent to watch it in the theater. I just bought the trilogy on DVD a couple of days ago. I am not sure I like the idea of the transposing of Hayden's face and all that...but I do have to admit, Hayden does resemble Mark Hammil closely enough they could be related. And that makes me happy.
