Review : Star Trek Nemesis

StarTrek Nemesis LogoI just got back from seeing Star Trek : Nemesis. This was the last of the Next Generation movies and it was a bit depressing to know that Star Trek has it's best times behind it rather than in front of it. It is really obvious that the creators of this movie spent a lot of time studding the greatest Star Trek movie ever made Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Kahn.

Now this movie had 40 minutes of it cut out from the script so we are in for one hell of a DVD and it might be a lot better movie with the extended version. Like there was some Wil Wheaton screen time but he had all talking lines taken out.

They really went out of their way to make a Star Trek Action movie and they did a lot better job than Insurrection and Generations. The dune buggy races at the start of the movie was lame at best but I guess it was the studios attempt trying to ad a bit of Star Wars action to Star Trek. The comparisons to Wrath of Kahn include a Nemesis of Picard as an evil clone of him in charge of the Romulan empire and a really big star ship, philosophical debate about what make a person unique (in Kahn it was a debate of how a person ages), a super death device that can wipe out a planet and one of the long time cast members sacrifices their lives to save the ship.

The special effects were really slick and this had a very cool production value not to mention good acting. You also get to see Riker and Troi in their PJs. And a lot of space ships blew up really good. This movie made me want to get The Undiscovered country and First Contact on DVD.

I actually thought that the evil clone of Picard who loves Gothic leather trench coat dresses looked a bit like Wil Wheaton if he shaved his head and raided Trent Reznor's closet. He also died in a unbelievable out of place way. Kahn died a lot cooler.

I consider my self some one who like Star Trek but I am not a Trekkie. I like Scifi but I don't have blind faith in scifi. I ended up liking this movie but it was suicidal of the studio to release it with in a week of Lord of the Rings. I would like to believe that Star Trek has a future who knows. Perhaps I should start actually watching Enterprise but I hope that the rumors of Star Trek Titan are true and we see a new TV series that doesn't get formulamatic. Hopefully the brand would be in better hands if it had some newer people at the top.

I liked it but I didn't rush to see it. I wish it had more Wil Wheaton in it.

Eh? What are these "Star Trek Titan" rumors that you speak of?

The rumor is that they are going to make a new TV series about the Titan and William Riker as Capitan. It would be after TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. They sort of hint at it when it ends with Riker getting his own ship. It would be a new series but it would be possible to have TNG people guest star and stuff.

I wish they would just Star Trek off the air for a while. There has been too much of it, with 5 series, and I think about 15 continuous years of trek, they've just done too much for anything to be new and exciting right now.

I once read that Majel Barret (noticably absent from this film) tried to get Paramount to shelf Trek for five years before starting a new series. Sadly that's not the way thing work.

Salon had a really good story a year ago about how Star Trek, long ago, stopped trying to push the boundry and settled into the mundane.

Star Trek Titan...That would be cool... I'm not really keen on Enterprise.. I think it lacks in a lot of areas.

I was really saddened at what a small part Wil Wheaton played in Nemisis. But I did like the movie. ;o)

I always thought Riker would make a good captain. Sounds like it would be fun. Has anyone else noticed the theme song to this latest Star Trek series? GAWD it is the corniest sounding theme song ever. It sounds like a bad remake of "meet me halfway across the sky-kenny loggins". Its just dumb. Scott Bakula is cool though. I have always liked him as a "regular Joe" type of actor

OMG! I thought I was the ONLY one who hated that theme song. Totally cheesy and soooooo does not fit Star Trek. Scott Bakula is very cool (and cute too!), I was excited when I learned he would be the captain. I think he really helps keep this series 'believable' as some of the other actors cast for parts suck ass. :o)

I really should watch that show. But I am a bit pissed that they decided to change star trek history and act like the Klingon and Federation wars never happened due to a bad first contact encounter in space. They went to the Klingon home world in the premiere of Enterprise and everything was cool that flies in the face of all the crap the Klingons gave Kirk and crew.

WOW! I didnt know that. The Klingons should be more hostile than ever in this latest series because of that. The reason why I quit watching star trek is that it has become too politically correct. I think that there should be tons of space combat between the Enterprise and the Klingons.

I totally agree about the Enterprise theme song! I mean, they made a really cool, non-traditional 'Trek opening sequence... and gummed it up with that stupid song. A good character in Engineering is what Enterprise is missing.

I heard that Titan would start off it's run with a tye in to Enterprise. While Archer is trying to figure out who is starting this Temporal Cold War, Riker is dealing with them in the future.

Hmm.. I don't think that Star Trek Music should ever have had lyrics. Now it does, and it makes me feel sad. No more trumpets just 'Faith of the Heart'. As far as Bakula goes, I swear, when they end this series (when Berman dies probably) Scott Bakula should end it like an episode of that really old Sci-Fi Show 'Quantum Leap'.

Now, THAT would be cool.

Though I like the theme song for Enterprise, I agree that it dosn't fit for a Star Trek show. I though I wish the series was more based on the Starfleet/Klingon relationships, all-out confrontation would not have been doable in the series. (The Klingons would wipe the galaxy clear of humans at this point in time.) And I belive the Klingon wars didn't start till after the "Federation of Planets" was created (after the Enterprise series ended) and the sharing of technologies among the people of the Federation, and therefore could actually stand up agaisnt the Klingons in an actuall battle.
