Review: Spam the Meat
You know in these days of people talking about Anti Spam software and too much Spam I realized that I have never actually eaten the real meat Spam or as much as Spam is a real meat so I picked up a can of Spam yesterday and fried it up with an egg and tomato for breakfast today.
I actually saw a documentary about the history of food and they had a section on Spam and how well used it was during World War 2 Spam is actually made from the pork shoulder and is ground up mixed with starch and pressed into a can an then cooked in the can.
Anywho There was actually a lot of it once I cut it up and started frying it. I only ate about half the can but I know I probably maxed out my daily fat intake right there. Spam reminds me of Tofu made out of meat. Sort of like Tofu for the Atkins diet (BTW I think the Atkins Diet is a scam and a bad idea)
It had an interesting texture that hardened up when fried and it wasn't that bad with pepper and hot sauce. The taste is a bit like ham and it is salty and fatty. Now why Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific islanders are so insane about Spam is beyond me. I guess they have a high pork diet. Spam is super non kosher and non low fat but it is interesting and I doubt that I will be eating it on a regular basis.
My step dad loves the stuff might try and make a Hawaiian Spam stir-fry dish for him when I am visiting over Christmas. I am going to have to see if I can find a recipe for the world war two favorite "Shit on a Shingle" which I believe is Spam on toast with baked beans. It dosen't look like what I was think ing of but a redneck named Ed has a recipie for what he calles "Shit on a Shingle".
So now I know what Spam Tastes like.

Try the spam website for some interesting recipes. Here is my favorite (and by "favorite", I mean repulsed and nauseated): http://media.hormel.com/anm/templates/spam_museum_recipes.asp?articleid=156&zoneid=27

S.O.S. is creamed chipped beef on toast, as far as I know. you can buy it frozen!
http://www.stouffers.com/stouffersproducts/product.asp?ipc=151
but the beef itself comes in a jar, dried, smoked, almost like jerky! the creamed part comes from putting it in white sauce.
military version to feed a crowd:

15 pounds of dried beef, and 1/4 oz pepper! don't let it get too spicy!

Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam... ;o)
I'm shocked that you have never had spam before now. It's vile and revolting... My step father LOVED it... as well as S.O.S - which is creamed chiped beef on toast (another vile concoction).

Spam can be quite good....as long as you have hot sauce.

Spam is wonderful...with Spam you can live. You know the McDonald's in Hawaii now serves Spam and eggs and rice(it's an Asian thing I think). Can't wait to taste Jake's Spam masterpieces at Christmas! Ernie (the stepdad)
