Review : Sonic Gems Collection for Gamecube
Sonic Gems Collection for Gamecube is a must for anyone who is really down with the hedgehog. You see Sega has released Sonic Mega Collection on Gamecube and Sonic Mega Collection Plus on PS2 and Xbox. These are collections of most of the 2d Sonic games from the 16-bit era and the PS2 and Xbox Mega Collection Plus have a slew of the Sonic Game Gear games added as a bonus. Now Sonic Gems is a collection of the games that did not make the previous game but are still awesome. Europe and Japan got the this on the PS2 as well as the Gamecube. Lucky wankers.
Sonic Gems Includes:
Sonic Fighters
This is an arcade game that use Saturn Hardware. It is like Virtua Fighter Kids but with Sonic characters. It is pretty cool to see Amy and Tales pound out Knuckles and Sonic in a cartoon 3d fighting game.
Sonic R
Sonic R is one of my favorite Saturn games. It is a racing game like a Sonic brand Mario Kart game but it features a catchy happy soundtrack and some of the best 3d graphics for the Saturn.
Sonic CD
This collection is worth getting just for this game. This is without a doubt the best Sega CD game ever made and this is the first time that it has been included in a collection. There was a lame PC port of the game but it was quite buggy. This game is the reason for getting a Sega CD back in the day and it was actually the game between Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. The graphics are quite early 90s with the pink and purple pastel color schemes and it had a great sound track and freaking huge levels. The collection has a high resolution version of the cool intro animation and this game look better than it did back on the Sega CD. Now the US version of Sonic CD had a different soundtrack than the Japanese one and the UK and Japanese PS2 versions of Sonic Gems Collection has the Japanese soundtrack as an option.
This collection also has lots of Game Gear games including some that never came to the US.
* Sonic the Hedgehog 2
* Sonic Spinball
* Sonic Triple Trouble
* Sonic Drift 2
* Tails' Skypatrol
* Tails Adventure
There also is Vectorman for Genesis/Megadrive and Vectorman 2 is unlockable. The Japanese version of the collection had Streets of Rage 1,2 and 3 as unlockable but Sega took them out due to the rating system. They wanted to ship the game with an E. That sucks I love Streets of Rage.
This is a good collection over a wide plethora of Sega systems. Hopefully Sonic team will make a collection of their good Non Sonic games like Burning Rangers and Nights in Dreams and hopefully the Nintendo Revolution virtual machines will be like this.
This is s great collection of Sega games for only 20 bucks and is a perfect companion to Sonic Mega Collection.

I picked this up just for Sonic CD, which in my opinion is still the best sonic game that has been released on any system and in any form.

The PC port of Sonic CD was a not very well done port of the Sega CD game. I don't know if this is a port from the PC game or the direct Sega CD source but unlike the PC game this version actually works.

Actually, my PC port worked pretty well. Still works, actually.
