Review : Sonic Advance 3 for Gameboy Advance
Yesterday succumbed to the overwhelming desire to buy sequels to successful videogames and Sega got thirty bucks from me for Sonic Advance 3 for Gameboy Advance. I have been loving 2-D Sonic games since the Sega Genesis/Megadrive ruled the videogame market over a decade ago.
Much like the other two Sonic Advance games this is the product of the Sonic Team division of Sega. Sonic Team has had a pretty damn good track record and almost every game that they made has rocked my world. Like the first two Sonic Advance games it could have come out of a time capsule from the early 90s. This is not that much of a surprise since some of the same designers and animators who put together the classic 16-bit Sonic games worked on these. The graphics and animation are colorful and slick. These are some of the best graphics that the gameboy advance can dish out.
When you start the game you get to pick two characters like Sonic and Tails. You then can use the second character to assist you by throwing them or getting carried by them. For example Tails can pick up Sonic and fly to places that you can't just jump to. Later on more sonic characters will be found and unlocked. There is an option of linking up to another Gameboy Advance and playing multiplayer. That is pretty cool but I have yet to try it out. It probably needs two game packs.
I can't wait to get through this game on my Gamecube Gameboy Player. This is a fun action platformer game and kids would love it but it contains just enough old school 2d-action that make it worth while for those who long for the days of Blast Processing. It is not all that new in concept but it is very well done. I have been digging the new old-school games and just hope that Sega continues to make them on the next generation of hardware. I would love to see what a new 2-D Sonic game would look like on the Playstation Portable or the Nintendo DS. Here is to hoping that the next generation of gaming hardware will be as friendly to the producers of new 2d-games.
Sonic Advance 3 is like finding a copy an out of print book from another era that you have not read before. It is just plain good sonic Goodness and if you like Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2 then you will probably get a kick out of Sonic Advance 3. It is Yuji Naka-licious
