Review: Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights for PS2, Gamecube and Xbox

Scooby Doo on GamecubeI am sitting at the galley of the Washington State Ferry the Hyak crossing the Puget Sound destined to Seattle. On friday I picked up a groovy Gamecube game for about 11 bucks. Scooby-Doo! Night of a 100 Frights. I actually have a hand full of games that I need to review so I promise more reviews and more videogame stuff in the coming weeks.

Scooby-Doo on Gamecube is one of the better games based on cartoons out there. It used to be that once a cartoon property was licenced they would crank out some worthless piece of crap just to make a quick buck off the name brand recognition of the cartoon. Night of 100 Frights was handled with a lot more time and effort than most cartoon based games. This was made by a THQ company and it was treated with the same respect that most Japanese games based on Anime get.

This game just oozes Scooby-Doo goodness. The graphics are fluid and cartoony with painstakingly accurate of Scooby-Doo movement and mannerisms. The backgrounds are really well modeled and textured with the classic Hannah Barbera feel to them but they look much better than the a quickly produced cartoons.

The game is a platform based 3d action game like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro and is well done. It is not the best 3d platform game ever but it is fun to play and is miles from the worst. It is a bit simplistic but this is a kids game and kids of any game can enjoy it. In the game you play as scooby-doo who has to explore a huge haunted mansion that is inhabited with just about every monster to ever show up in a Scooby-Doo cartoon. They bad guys are all here and I loved it when the Creaper showed up and started chasing Scooby. Scooby can knock down bad guys by charging at them and can sneak past them in classic tip toe Scooby-doo style.

The Scooby-Doo gang shows up from time to time to help Scooby out with his task at hand. The voices are right on with the current cast of Scooby doo including the great Fred Welkler the voice of Fred. I loved the fact that a character played by Don Knots showed up and I was not sure if it was voiced by the actual actor or if it was an impersonator. There is also an interactive laugh track that kicks in from time to time.

This game is in the Playstation's greatest hits collection as you can find it for $19.95 new and used for even less. It was first on PS2 but was ported to the Gamecube and Xbox.

This is a damn fine game that respects the history of Scooby-Doo. ( I can't believe I just wrote the phrase respects the history of Scooby-Doo! ) It is not the greatest 3d platform game of all time but it is well made and would be perfect for a kid who likes Scooby-Doo.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else is as stupid as I am, since I can't get to the basement in the mansion. I am not really all that video game saavy, my son got this game for his birthday, and since I am a HUGE Scooby fan, I haven't been able to put it down. Just curious if anyone has any tips since none of the gaming magazines seem to know that they made this game for the Xbox too. Thanks.

My son is currently playing the Scooby game, and he got very far into the mystic manor, and he fell in a gap in the floor, on a ramp. It's in a narrow hallway. He can't get back from under the floor. Do you have any suggestions? Is it just a gliche in the game? He doesn't want to turn it off, because he got so far, and he can't save it. Thanks!

I'm helping my kids with this game and we are stuck on All Scares Upstairs Part 4 - we're stuck with Scooby on the floor - have tried so many times to have him jump from the bed up to the trampoline - can't seem to get there. What is the trick to this? Help!
