Review : Resident Evil on DVD

Resident Evil DVDI just finished watching the Resident Evil movie that I borrowed from BBQ. It is actually really well done and was one of the extremely rare times that a videogame was the inspiration of an actually very good movie. This was a pretty well done big budget action movie about zombies in an underground complex. The movie was shot in Germany by a European film company and they really got their money's worth out of the sets and environments. The director is the same guy who made the first Mortal Kombat movie so he has gotten off on making movies based on games before. I actually liked the first Mortal Kombat movie but I am in the minority.

The resident evil move was really well assembled visualized and realized with a really well thought out plot and good directing. The plot and setting is a prequel to the games and there is a lot to love for the players of the games that would be ignored by the general pop corn eating audience. The cast stars the woman from The Fifth Element and the chick from Girlfight. They kick much un dead ass without ripping off the movie Aliens too much.

The DVD looked great and there were lots of extra features and a commentary track.

This is a damn fine dark modern zombie with plenty of action but did not get super cheesy. The sets and special effects were great and we could only hope that other movies based of video games were this well put together. It was not as freaky as 28 Days later but it was much better than Signs. I hope they are working on a sequel and some one has the idea to make a movie based on Devil May Cry.

I second the thoughts about the original Mortal Kombat movie, though Christopher Lambert as Raiden was a stretch...

As for Resident Evil, I didn't care much for it. I saw it in the theaters and I guess I had set my expectations too high because I walked out wanting my money back. I felt the action was too predictable and the ending dragged on a bit. I should probably give it another viewing with more realistic expectations...

That sounds good! I didn't watched that movie yet and I thought it wouldn't be worth it and didn't planned to watch it. But your reviews might turn things around as I like the RE games very much.

I was watching the first Tomb Raider movie some weeks ago and I'm actually glad I didn't bought that crap but d/l'd a copy of it. I deleted this useless waste of space from my HD soon after I realized I've wasted 90 minutes of my live for such a worse movie! And I'm almost sure the sequel will not be better.

It's good to hear then that there are actually good game-to-movie conversions!

Hey, I liked the Mortal Combat movie also. But I'm a big fan of the 'video game movie' genre. It's a special kind of 'B' if you know what I mean. Heck I liked the Wing Commander movie. ;-P Anyway, ya, I loved the Resident Evil movie. It's my favorite video game movie by far. I thought they did a fantastic job with it. I can watch that one over and over. Very slick.

Bad Boys II is really funny it is much better than Kung Pow. Dude the dubbing was so bad in that movie! One more jab at Signs and all your Gamecube games might mysteriously end up snapped in two. It's not my fault you have ADD and can't follow a movie that's not full of explosions. Go watch Fraudzilla again.

Oh man, I don't know if I can share with this rosy outlook on the Resident Evil movie. Me and a couple of friends that had all recently cleared the Gamecube remake of the original game watched the this when it came out on DVD. Yikes.

Perhaps we were dissipointed since the only things the movie shared with the game were guns, zombies, "Umbrella Corporation," "Raccoon City," and the title "Resident Evil." C'mon. At least the upcoming movie sequel introduces my hero, Jill Valentine.

Don't forget the mansion, the statues, the mazes, the conspiracy, zombie dogs, the lickers. Even I thought that Alice's dress looked like Jill in RS3.

What else did you want? "You the master of unlocking take this lock pick"

They're working on a sequel to the movie now and it has Jill from RE3 in it.

While I'll grant you that the dialogue was about on par with the games, I felt the games had more of a dark/spooky/suspense vibe versus the movie's brightly lit/sci-fi/uber-violent antics. Clearly another case of misplaced expectations.

"An actually very good movie?" Oh yeah, that was a regular Citizen Kane, that was. I didn't know zombie movies were supposed to make me laugh so goddamn hard. Fulci could make a better movie if you chopped off his arms and fed them to him, and he's dead.

I can't wait until "House of the Dead" comes out, so I can set fire to Uwe Boll and have it written off as "justifiable homicide."

Ok, I have bunch of gripes regarding this movie, but I will keep it simple. In what kind of a zombie movie do they kill off a majority of the characters with a laser-grid, booby-trap! What kind of crap was that? And slow-motion kung-fu matrix junk... in a zombie movie? Come on now. Let's not forget to mention that a licker, one of the weakest creatures in RE2 managed to be the final creature. oooo creepy, it has a huge toungue, look out! This movie did not have Barry, it did not have REAL zombies (zombies with CGI make-up that hardly bite people DO NOT count), it did not have the Tyrant, it had no Rebecca Chambers, they messed up the whole creation of the virus story, no Hunters, it wasn't atmospheric, and Marilyn Manson did the soundtrack. Those are the few reasons that I hate that movie. Keep in mind, though, that I am the biggest Resident Evil Fanboy I know, so my expectations were REALLY high. I even think that "House of the Dead" will be more enjoyable than "Resident Piece of Crap". The fact that the same director is also helming "Aliens vs. Predator" makes me want to hang myself.

So what you wanted them to rip of every George Romero movie ever made or just play the game and hit record on a VCR.

The big problem about making a movie based on a videogame, scifi book or comics book is that it can NEVER live up the the expectations of the fans who would have done things different. There are people who are pissed that there is no Tom Barbadil in the Lord of the Rings movie

Yeah, unfortunately there are too many anal retentive, annoying as all hell fanboys out there, such as myself, who won't except ANY creative license regarding video game properties. It is one of my many faults, and it is one of the main reasons that many films are ruined for me (Two Towers, Matrix Reloaded, Freddy vs. Jason)

I usually have low exectations when it comes to movies for nerds so it helps if you expect it to suck and it does not.

Posted by: Jake at September 11, 2003 8:33 PM

Who cares if it lives up to gamers' expectations? I don't hate the new Star Wars movies, for example, because they don't "live up to my expectations;" I hate them because they're shitty movies.

Even so, there are certain, very basic expectations that should have been met here. Like, if I go to see a zombie horror movie? It had better goddamn have a bunch of people getting killed (and preferably eaten) by zombies. Not high-tech traps. ZOMBIES. Even "House of the Dead" will have that much, and its preview is the WORST THING I'VE EVER SEEN.

I don't care if the "Resident Evil" movie was like the stuff George Romero (who was originally supposed to direct this turkey) made. But at least Romero's movies were SCARY, and THOUGHT-PROVOKING, and COMPETENTLY WRITTEN AND DIRECTED.

And even if they had ripped off Romero, it'd just be more grist for the mill; this movie was so thick with bad cliches that there was hardly any room left over for contrived plot twists.

I guess what I'm saying is that it would be nice if certain movie studios would understand that liking video games does not necessarily equate with liking big-budget crapfests and awful scripts. Nor does it mean we think daytime soap operas are the pinnacle of acting.

And for God's sake, the name is Bombadil.

Sorry there is few Middle Earth words in my spell checker. Will you at least agree with me that 28 Days Later kicked ass?

Posted by: Jake at September 12, 2003 12:55 AM

My god i'm sick of all this criticism of RE the movie! it's such a great movie and cm'on if the movie was just like the game then there'd be no point in the movie b/c you'd know what would happen! Besides this was a prequel before the games so give it break! I love every second of the movie and watch it everyday! I can't wait until the sequel comes out and shuts you all up! LOL But seriously, it is the best video game inspired movie to date :-/ It was everything it should have been. You were lost in the beginning yes as you shoulda been, and you slowly learned and grew with the main character.I think everything was great, I wish Rain, Michelle Rodriguez's character could have been in the sequel cuz she kicks @$$. But oh well you can't get everything you want. Til Apocalypse, RE remains my favorite movie to date with 28 Days Later in at a close second. :-D
