One of the funniest damn show on DVD that you can buy is Reno 911!. This is a show on Comedy Central that is a spoof of the reality show Cops. The show is half scripted and half improvised but it is freaking funny and brilliant.
It is set about a minor crappy police department in a crappy suburb of Reno Nevada that is being followed by a camera crew for a reality TV show. It is pure sarcastic genius that reflects the sort of listless weirdness that manifest out of the sheer boredom of small towns our in the desert. I grew up in a small town in the desert so I really dig it. The production value is pretty damn good because it is shot in a real locations instead of some sound stage. It is sort of a similar concept to The Office and the super dry humor.
The cast is spiced up with Det. Wiegel the odd girl out, Det. C. Johnson the former stripper cop, Det. Garcia the really angry racist life-er cop, Det. Junior who always wears a set of shades with a bullet-proof vest, Lt. Dangle the in closet gay cop with super short Daisy Duke shorts, Det. Jones and Det. Raineesha who have an on and off thing. The side characters steal the show. They are created by really good improve comedians. It is the neurotic ticks of the characters that really make the show what it is. You never look up to these folks but you all know people who are just like them.
The comedy is sometimes saucy and they are not afraid to make off color jokes. The dialog contains swearing and is bleeped out for comedic purposes. Also there is real nudity that is blurred out for even more comedic purposes.
The DVD pack is a two disc set with fourteen episodes about half with cast commentary track and loads of deleted and longer scenes. It is a freaking steal for only twenty bucks. I am kicking my own ass for not watching this show before it came out on DVD. There is a whole second season on TV right now and I can't wait for it to come out of DVD as well and I really freaking hope that they make a season three.
It is so damn funny that I am almost loose my bladder control.
