Review : Reflex Arcade Stick for Xbox

Reflex Arcade Stick for XboxAs I am currently awaiting the release of Capcom VS SNK2 and Marvel VS Capcom 2 for Xbox Live. It thought it would be prudent to get an Xbox Arcade fighting stick. Now I do have my Pelican Arcade Stick for PS2 and my PS2 to Xbox converter but the problem with that is that the Xbox Live connector has to be plugged into close to the adapter and it only give you the length of the Xbox Live headset cord.

That is way to restrictive for me so when I was in Electronic Boutique at West lake center in Seattle picked up a Reflex Arcade Stick by Radica Gamester. First of all I thought how cool it was that this thing was only 16 bucks and less than the cost of a standard Xbox Controller. It is a bit weird that they have the actual joystick removed in the packaging but I guess they could get the box down in size. There are two sticks included and they can be snapped in and the joystick comes with a small Allen wrench that you can use to unlock and replace the joystick with the other one with a more rounded head. That is a bit weird and I don't know why but I have the song "Detachable Penis" stuck in my head

The form is very nice with a nicely weighted base and rounded edges There is a rubber like finish on the grey right hand rest before the buttons. The stick is damn good and very arcade authentic. It actually clicks loud and might get a bit annoying on Xbox Live but what the hell. The buttons are about half the size of a typical arcade machine but they are very authentic and have a good rubber like coat, a good click and spring. Also they kept with the color scheme on the base of the buttons and included the left and right trigger buttons so you get a total of 8 arcade style buttons in the traditional Capcom layout. I am going to set to all three punches and kicks. Also it features a program button with two macro triggers. That thank God are in a good location.

My only real complaint. Is the Start and Back buttons that are inset and off to the right side.. you need to take your hand off the buttons or use your right pinky to press them. I wish they put them above the two rows of buttons where they put their logo. But this is a minor complaint. It also features a standard Xbox Controller expansion slot on the top side of the controller so this thing is just perfect for Xbox live fighting game.

Dead or Alive 3 and Kakuto Chojin work quite well. But I am counting down the days until 2/12/03 that I can get Capcom VS SKN2 Xbox and Ken, Haomaru, Rock and I can lay the smack down on punk bitches using the lame sauce standard Xbox controller with this bad ass joystick.

This stick is such a good deal and joy to use that it is a damn pity that there is not more good fighting games on the Xbox to take advantage of it.

Hey I just noticed the cool new logo/type...looks great, less filling.

I thought that This site more closely resembles a Zine than a traditional blog. I messed around with a new different logo but decided to keep the changes to a minimum. This one now with 50% more improved Kerning and flavor.

Are you not a Mortal Kombat fan? I mean, don't get me wrong! I am all about kicking some serious a** with Wolverine, but I can never get enough of good ol' Sub Zero and his icy temper!

Actually I am more of a Street Fighter, Capcom, Namco fighting game fan. I'll probably rent the new Mortal Kombat game but the last MK game that I was really excited about was MK2 for Snes.

I can agree with the MK2 for SNES. I have never cared for the Street Fighter series though. I think that series has outlived it's prime. But the new Mortal Kombat is a twist of the old MK and all new exciting extras. I was pleasantly surprised, and am now addicted.

Blasphemy. I love all Capcom 2D fighting games. From Street Fighter to Capcom vs SNK2. I don't really consider 3d fighting games to be the same genre as 2d fighting games. I really love Dark Stalkers 3, Street Fighter 3 3rd strike and Capcom Vs SNK2. Call me anti-American but the Japanese have got 2d and 3d fighting games down to an art form and I would like to one day see the US catch up for fighting game quality. But I will take your advice and rent the Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance for Xbox.

To each their own, I suppose. I am not opposed to 2D fighting games, I just don't care for Street Fighter. I also don't care for Virtua Fighter. So sue me! I am a Tekken/Mortal Kombat/Guilty Gear kinda gal.

I just got the Reflex today. I bought it specifically for use with Capcom vs. SNK EO. The stick is a good buy for $16.99 but is does have it's flaws. The microphone for Xbox live doesn't seem to work. It plugs in fine, but everything you hear is very faint with a lot of static, and no one can hear you. I find it MUCH easier to pull off more complicated moves with the Reflex, but simpler moves are harder. The stick seems to have trouble with diagonal movement. Try blocking low, and it seems to not register half the time. But doing a firball is a snap. You can not program stick moves, only a series of button presses. This pretty much makes the programming aspect of the joystick useless. Anywayz.. it beats the crap out of playing with the D-pad, my thumb was starting to hurt. It's a fine product for the price. I'm sure that a better more expensive joystick will come out soon. If you want one of these, better pick it up soon, they are becoming scarce with the popularity of Capcom vs. SNK on Live.

That is weird. I have been using it with Xbox live and Capcom VS SNK2 since Wednesday. I actually now have over a hundred wins racked up but I use the headset. It might just be the problems that you are having with the network traffic and setting. Not everyone has their voice chat turned on. Some folks deliberately disable it so they can spend all of their available band with on the fight. I have never really used a macro programming button on any controller but I never have had any problems doing special moves. I think it is a damn fine stick regardless of the price.

Hi All,

Why my Reflex Arcade Stick for Xbox does not work with CAPCOM vs. SNK2 EO?

You see, the stick can navigate the menues (in the game) and Options, and the button indeed DO work in the game, but it is the actual stick that does not move the character to the left or right.

When I plug the regular Xbox controller (S Model) it also does not move the character with the DIGITAL "+" shaped stick, but rather with the left thumb stick it moves the character just fine.

So I wonder if the Analog functionality of this arcade stick is malfunctionning?

I play DOA3, KAKUTO CHOJIN and they play just fine. Is there any setup that I need to twaek in order to make it "recognize" this arcade stick?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

or even better, an X arcade stick :p

That is because you have your control set to EO mode. If you play as Arcade or arcade control in Console mode it should work fine. I used my reflex stick for about an hour and a half last night playing Capcom VS SNK2 EO on Xbox live and I kicked much ass.

I will bet you one million dollars it is the EO mode setting. DOA3 and Kakuto Chojin work with the digital control pad that the stick emulates so there is no change in software setting.

EO mode is a joke and no serious player would use it online.

X arcade Sticks have poor voice support and due to their really short cord everyone who has one that I play online has to sit on the floor close to your Xbox. Not to mention an XArcade stick is a hundred buck and I would prefer the Reflex and still have 80 bucks left over. I bragged last night to an XArcade owner that I was kicking it on the couch while he was on the floor with his super short cord.

DRxAndy The real URL for the XArcade is http://www.x-arcade.com/
I would email you but you use a fake email address. I am I the only one who thinks that paying a hundred bucks for a joystick is absolutly fucking insane?

I bought this arcade stick for Capcom vs. SNK 2 and it just broke on me yesterday. First off, the diagonals suck to begin with, and secondly, the diagonals broke on me. Reflex said they'll replace it for me, but I'm skeptical about getting a new one. If only a DECENT company would come out with a DECENT arcade stick for the Xbox

I just bought a reflex stick for Marvel vs Capcom 2. I find its only slightly better than the S-pad. The diagonals don't regeister very well so crouch-blocking sometimes doesn't work. As well diagonal air dashing is extremely difficult to do. As well, the stick gets really annoying as it clicks whenever the joystick is moved.

I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about gutting my Reflex and making a TRUE arcade stick out of it. If anyone wants to check out the info go here:

Everyone needs a hobby. I like mine just the way it is.. That site was interesting how they had an email from Capcom saying that there was legal reasons why they could not make Marvel VS Capcom 2 Xbox live enabled. Did Marvel Lawyers object?

Somebody help with my new obsession- I NEED an arcade like stick for my PC in order to play mame emulation games. I got the shadowblade with adapter but cannot get it to work.
ANY and all advice on what and how to get that arcade feel is appreciated- thanks

Posted by: Stephanie at December 22, 2003 5:14 PM

Well one of these babies with a PS2 to USB adaptor would work.

Posted by: Jake at December 22, 2003 5:19 PM

I am wondering why the shadowblade with PS2 to USB adapter did not work?
Which would be my best bet? I love the large console style of the shadowblade. Has anyone used one with an adapter for Mame games?

Posted by: Stephanie at December 22, 2003 7:52 PM

Well I do not know because I do not have a shadow blade. My guess is that it is because it is an analog joystick and most classic arcade games are digital joystick. When you configure a PS controller using Direct X you need to determine if the analog pads are going to be used instead of the digital pad but direct X can't handle both at the same time.

This thing is such a peice of junk I don't even know where to begin...honestly jake, if you want a good arcade stick for a budget price pick up a Pelican Real Arcade Pro, They're 20 bucks a peice (and totally OWN that Peice of junk pelican you reviewed and gave a 10...how you could do that is beyond me) but a universal one will run you 60 or so. I bought two of them and swapped out the parts for better ones bought at happcontrols.com (number 1 arcade parts manufactorer in the US) took only 20 minutes to do that...incredibly easy... Now I use it for tournaments... :D
