Review : Red Dwarf 1 on DVD
After deeply enjoying The Office DVD I spent some of my Christmas cash on a DVD set of Red Dwarf Season 1. Red Dwarf is hands down the funniest British comedy made it the last twenty years. I have grown to love the show when they started showing it on PBS pledge drive week during the 90s.
Red Dwarf is a sort of a comedy in a far out Sci-Fi setting. It is set on the gargantuan mining ship Red Dwarf that has been lost in space for three million years. The only beings left alive are Dave Lister a charismatic slob who is quite a slacker, a holographic recreation of Lister's dead bunk make the tight ass petty neurotic Arnold Rimmer, there is a semi senile super computer named Holly, and a James Brown like creature named Cat who evolved from Lister's pregnant cat over several million years. The rest of the crew died in a accident but lister was saved by being locked in stasis for breaking rules by bring on his pet cat. Lister is missing his dead girl crush Christine Kochanski but their adventures they encounter time travel, worm holes, alternate dimensions and other Sci-Fi weirdness.
There is a brilliant repertoire between Lister and Rimmer that is undeniably hilarious. The cast is full of brilliant comedic minds, the scripts are fresh and creative and the execution of the series is top notch. Red Dwarf is not just a rip of of other Sci-fi shows but it is a rich and hilarious comedy.
There is a total of eight seasons of the TV series and there is rumored to be a Red Dwarf movie in the works.
The first DVD is full of all six hour long episodes of Season 1 with subtitles and cast commentary tracks. The second DVD is full of interviews, behind-the-scenes documentaries and assorted Red Dwarf goodness. It is a must own for all Red Dwarf fans and fans of British comedy should check it out.
This show is about a thousand times more creative and funny that the piece of US TV crap called "Friends".

Yes, there's a Red Dwarf movie in the works. It's being shot (of all places) in Australia.
The official site is http://www.reddwarf.com/deck09/deck_fs.html

Well there are some brilliant U.S. comedies...Sienfeld is one of them. I didn't really think that Red Dwarf was as funny as sienfeld. It is a funny show though. It really isn't fair to compare red dwarf to Friends because these are two TOTALLY different genres. I mean who the hell knows what red dwarf is besides us nerds? Ask someone on the street. Really what we are dealing with here is a comparison between mainstream and elite nerd cinema.
Godzilla, Hong Kong cinema, Quentin Tarrantino movies, anime,etc...these types of entertainment are really the realm of nerds like us. Arguably I could not be considered as much of a fanatic for nerd cinema because, apparently, I am a "nerd hybrid", posessing nerd qualities as well as "mainstream" qualities. I just do not know how to deal with comedy that comes from "great" Britain because I just don't think it is all that funny. I like to watch comedy central though because of the standup routines that they normally show. My favorite comedy show from Great Britain is "Absolutely Fabulous" or "abfab" as it is commonly referred to. I think it is 20 or 30 percent funnier than red dwarf... "abfab" is possibly the most degenerate show in the history of comedy. I mean, there was one episode where the daughter was sold to Turkish drug dealers and yet it was STILL funny as hell!Oh Hell! I could go on for hours about this so nevermind.
What is funnier than red dwarf?
DR. Who is much funnier but it is funny because it is so damn bad and isn't supposed to be funny. It is just bad English crapola sci-fi.
I could write an entire essay on this subject but I will not because of the hate-mail I would recieve.

Great show. I think 'Backwards' is my favorite episode (third season?). That's cool to hear there's a movie in the works. I had no idea.

I'm with Pete on Abfab - I love that show most of all the brit comedies (probably because it's showing me the future of my life... gay husband, neurotically evil best friend (my sister), daughter who will despise me and love me (I have two)). I do like red dwarf though - mostly the early Red Dwarf rather than the later ones.
I agree with you on it being funnier than most US sitcoms - which are utter shit.

I still think "The Office" is my favorite. Red Dwarf is good but something about the dry wit of "The Office" I just love. AbFab also great. Did anyone like Coupling or I think it was called Man Child?????

What about The Young Ones? I thought that show was really funny...there were not enough episodes of it though.

Remember that movie called Drop Dead Fred? It was an utterly crappy movie that starred one of the guys from the young ones...can't recall his name but the funny thing is that there is an online petition to release the movie on DVD by some wierdo!
clickety, click, click, here...

Yeah I thought the Young Ones was pretty cool back when they used to show it on MTV in the 80s. I should see if I can rent it on DVD anywhere near.
Yeah I love AbFab as well.
You know I will probably be tarred and feathered for saying this but I have never seen Dr. Who.

I grew up watching Red Dwarf, so it's great to see it get a mention here, it really is a fantastic show. :D
You might find the official site at www.reddwarf.co.uk to be entertaining, BTW. I appreciated the Holly desktop-wallpaper ( http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/deck02/wallpaper/Holly1024x768.jpg ) they have there - there's something amusing about having Holly's mug there to greet you when you boot up your computer. ;D

I'm surprised no one's mentioned 'Bottom'. That series hands down holds more laughs per minute than either RD or ABFAB. If anyone's a fan of Young Ones, be sure to check this gem of a series out. It stars Rik Mayall from the Young Ones (I believe he was the punk guy). He's credited for writing on both series also. Absolutely great commedy series. Way, way over the top humor.
Thanks for mentioning 'The Young Ones' Pete. It got me thinking and searching for 'Bottom'. Looks like Amazon sells the complete series on DVD: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000A02YG/qid=1073117962/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-1667760-9362225?v=glance&s=dvd

Coolness! I got my Red Dwarf 2 DVD. The store was out of the first one. Man they are hellishly expensive!
I will say one thing ... I found a stray copy of the unaired USA Red Dwarf pilot episode ... Sharaza works wonders ... And well ... "WHAT WHERE THEY THINGKING?!!!" It was utterly awful!! Not much like the real Brit. thing at all. The only connection it had to the Brit. version was Kryten who was played by the real actor. The rest of it was just crud!! The we americans bastardized a beautiful thing and twisted it into something just hideous! It was so bad it was funny in the same light. I cannot use words to describe it ... you'll just have to see it for yourself someday.
I love the Brit. Red Dwarf and am viewing the last season's episodes. Can't wait till the rest of the seasons come out on DVD.
Whatever did happen to that movie they where supposedly making?

Yes it is. The movie has been written, budgeted, sets built and they are going to start shooting it in March. Hopefully we can see it this fall.
