Review : Playstation2 Network Adaptor

Playstation2 Network Adaptor InstalledGuess what kiddies? After work I stopped by my local Game Stop Store and they had a small selection of Playstation2 Network adapters in stock. You see these are super hard to find now and if you get one before the end of the year you can send in a card for a free copy of Twisted Metal Online when it ships. I have one and you do not HAHAHA!

So I figured I was planning on getting one sooner or later so what the heck. It is actually smaller than I expected and it looks almost just like the multitap a black box about the same size. Installation was a no-brainer and I had the splitter and long phone cord that my was plugged into my Sega Dreamcast. I wish that Sony included a splitter and a long phone cord. At least Sega included a phone cord.

Any who the configuration of my network logon and dial up ISP info was super easy because I had all the information in my PDA and the software supports the GameShark Keyboard or any USB keyboard for that matter. I like the Game shark board because it is light and compact and only $20. They keyboard is a must for laying down smack and chewing the crap in the online locker rooms and in the game.

Unfortunately the only playable demos included with the PS2 Network Adapter is Freqancy and some damn John Madden football game. I really wish they just shipped Twisted Metal Online with the bloody modem rather than having us wait for it. So I played a game of Madden and got my but kicked. I picked the Seattle Seahawks so I had an excuse to loose. But to my surprise the logon process and finding a game was really simple and the game I played against another modem user was almost lag free and was quite cool. It really was a lot more interesting to play against another real human rather than some AI bot over and over again.

Keyboard and GamepadI guess the next game that will use the online game play that I really care about is Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 so I might pick it up if I am not to obsessed with GTA Vice City later on this month.

The PS2 Network adapter is really done right and it is going to be really cool once there is a lot of kick ass games that support it. I think Sony did the right thing by making DSL or Cable modem connection optional and the voice chat on Xbox Live really won't be missed and they have a system like SOCOM Navy Seals to have voice chat over DSL if you have it. Also Resident Evil Online is going to kick ass and as soon as they make a Capcom Fighter game with online support I will be all over it. Capcom VS SNK 2 had online support in Japan on both PS2 and Dreamcast. Damn it I will buy the game all over again if I could play it online.

I am pissed at Sony for not shipping a Web Browser and email client with this damn thing. We know they exist in Japan and even Sega did it.

It is really cool but if you can't get one I wouldn't worry about it because there really are no games worth caring about for it yet. It was about what I expected but the only let down was no good pack-in game and no web browser.

I dont get it....you mean you can play madden or any other game they release online using DIALUP!!?? How can this be?!!

Posted by: pete at October 25, 2002 11:23 AM

Well it looks like in some games dial up players can only play one other dial up player. However Madden was just fine on dial up. What I really want to see is online Smackdown and Street Fighter style games. i would get a cable modem for that.

But in PS2 Tribes 2 you can exclude modem uses from high speed online games.

Yeah I want one. The old lady might get mad at me though. I'll be spending more time with my "girlfriend" than I will be with her lol!

I have seen some 3rd party netword adapters for PS2 that plug into the usb. I have a usb keyboard and mouse, so I am out of usb ports. Does anyone know if usb hubs work for PS2?

Posted by: Hexum at December 16, 2002 2:30 PM

Well I think those USB modems were only official products in Japan and I am not sure if they would work on a US PS2 with US Software. I think all standard compliant USB hubs would work on the PS2. I might try one of my USB hubs on it just to see. But I would just stick with an official network adaptor unless it is authorized by Sony.

The usb ones dont support all the games, and they wont support future games, it totally isn't worth it, trust me i own both sony brand and usb brand, and no, it's not just in japan where they use them, it's 100% made for american ps2's

Let's see your IP is 213.42.2.9. I

That means you are using Emirates Internet of Emirates Telecommunications Corporation. I could email your local police and let them know that you are using pirated videogames.

Hey I need one of them things. Where can i find that keyboard i cant find the thing anywhere. Also when i get a network adaptor (in about 5 days) ill come back and post a few games here ill be playing on and see if i come across with any of you! BTW is the headset for DSL games only?

I used a HID compatible ps2(keyboard not game console) to usb adapter and it worked just fine. Have tried the mouse support yet though. I have heard from friends that they have used usb game controllers to run the second and third controllers on the playstation, although they've never been able to get it to work when I was there. :-/ Seriously though a $9.99 usb/ps2 keyboard-mouse adapter from the local computer store worked like champ.

I have used a USB mouse to play Half-Life on the PS2. It worked great. I wish that more first person shooters on game consoles worked with USB mice.
