Review : Pelican USB Data and Power Cable for PSP

I saw something very cool at Best Buy today while my girlfriend was looking for new releases of old Black and White movies on DVD. It was a USB data cable for the PSP by Pelican Accessories and that on it's own was not surprising but this had a power cord in addition to the mini USB connector about six inches from the mini USB connection.

This lets you charge the PSP over a powered USB jack such as a powered USB hub or when plugged into a computer. I bet that you could even plug it into the Playstation 2 and charge the PSP from there. I have not tried it out but it should work That is super cool and it now means that I can charge my PSP in two places. I left my normal AC adapter over at my girlfriend's place. This was a bargain at ten bucks since an extra AC adapter starts at fifteen. I think that if Sony has the gall to charge $250 with no games they could have at least included a USB cable so you can hook it up to a computer. Now you need a USB cable in order to get music, pictures and videos clips on the PSP and being able to also charge over the USB connection is pretty damn cool.

You have a great site! I enjoy your thorough reviews and content.

It sounds like the Pelican powered-USB cable is a pretty worthwhile investment with the PSP. I've already been using my Pelican "Power Brick" pretty heavily to charge my PSP while on the go. You can charge the PSP once or twice off it, and/or keep it powered off the Power Brick when going on long trips.

Another nice feature I discovered is that you can chain the AC adapter to Power Brick, Power Brick to PSP, allowing you to charge/power both simultaneously. Having only one power adapter, I keep it at home and the Power Brick in my laptop bag .

Again, great site!

Well this site can be fun to do. The PSP still has twice the battery life of my old Laptop PC. If I can get three to four hours of playing Tony Hawk THUG2 Remix on PSP that will get me through most days with recharging at night. If I flew more I would get a battery pack.

This is great news. I checked out the Pelican site, but couldn't find this cable. The only one I saw looked like a standard USB cable. Do you have the part number?

I have one of those for my DS, but it never seemed to charge it completely. I would only get half the battery life out of a "full" charge.

Yeah I love this thing, got mine at Wal Mart for 4 bucks. Only thing with the power cable is, I have found that when it is plugged in, the PSP keeps getting lost from my PC. lol

So if I want to transfer anything, I have to unplug it. Otherwise, it seems to kill the connection.

Having a real powered external USB hub really helps. The PSP and my iPod can charge when my iBook is not hooked up or is sleeping.

Cool, I'll need to pick one of these things up. Jake, do you have a part number for this cable? I don't want to get the wrong one.

Hey Jake,

I read your weblog in a regular basis. I was just reading Wired and lo and behold, your article on reading web comics on the PSP was mentioned!

Nice job, and congrats! :-)

There is no part number on the cord but the AC power feature was visible and on the box.

There is a "hack" to change the icon of the PSP when you plug it in into your computer. Read up on it over at my site: http://www.totalgamerz.com/

On my Mac it is pretty easy to customize an icon. Like the icons on the PSP's Stick.
