Review : Pelican Nerf Controller for PlayStation 2
I have been getting a kick out of wireless controllers for the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii so I thought it would be cool to get a wireless controller for the PS2. I have had my eye on the Nerf Controllers for PS2 since I first read about them on Th3 IntarWeb. This is a joint venture from the video game accessory maker Pelican and the Nerf Lords over at Hasbro. The controller will set you back $30 bucks and it needs two AAA Batteries.

This is a decent wireless PS2 controller with regular buttons and sticks but is compleatly encapsulated into a soft spongy Nerf foam case. It is really weird to get used to since it feels so different than any other controller out there but after using it for a weekend I ended up loving it. It comes in a couple of colors and I got the blue one. The design is very ergonomic and is pretty comfortable with a strange organic feeling and the controller is surprisingly light. The external casing is soft and grippy but has a sturdy plastic core underneath. The buttons, pad and sticks are the only hard points on the design. It feels pretty sturdy but it is not totally indestructible.
The controller transmits a signal to the dongle in the PS2 controller port and it does not need to be turned on and off. There was no noticeable lag in any of the games that I played. It is pretty much simple plug-and-play. The biggest issue that I have with it is the lack of rumble motors. I understand that it might have eaten into battery life but since there have been good wireless gamepads that had rumble motors it would have been cool to have them included but the use of them optional.
It sort of sucks that they used triple A "AAA" batteries instead of good old double A batteries. I will have to get a back of rechargeable AAA batteries but I already have a bunch of double A batteries that I could have used. It also sort of sucks that you need to use a small screwdriver (not included) to install the batteries (also not included). I also was not crazy about the smaller start and select button. The instruction manual had a neato warning about not hitting people in the face with it or letting dogs chew on it.
This would be a great controller for kids and I just know that there are going to be some sports dorks spiking the controller after a touchdown in Madden 2KWhatever. If you are willing to get over not having rumble it is a really awesome alternative to a standard PS2 controller. It feels a little weird but it feels so right.
