Review : Men's Pocky

Men's PockyI have to write about an essential modern Japanese junk food. Pocky are chocolate covered pretzel sticks and they are a staple of Japanese convince stores. The name is an onomatopoeia that is based on the sound it makes when you snap into them. The pretzels are not salted and the chocolate has more palm and saturated fats than your typical American chocolate. I don't have any scientific nutritional data to back that up but it just seams a bit more decadent than Hersheys.

Penny Arcade likes Pocky

The most common type of Pocky is milk chocolate followed by Strawberry and you can find that in most larger US supermarkets in the Asian food section but if you go to a specialty Asian market like Uwajimaya you can find many variety of Pocky including knockoffs.

My favorite of these are Men's Pocky. It is a darker bitter bolder chocolate that puts hair on your chest and you can turn head of most females by telling them that it is strong enough for a woman but made for a man baby! Oh behave!

Strawberry Pocky is not bad and is so pink and Kawaii it will make you gag.

Milk Pocky is sort of a creamy vanilla flavor sort of like icing.

Caramel Pocky is just plain good and there is not as many in a pack but they are a nice change.

Coconut Pocky are normal Pocky sticks rolled in coconut shavings and chocolate. It is da bomb.

You can learn more about the various flavors of Pocky here and if you live in a place where you can't find it in a store you can order Pocky online from RamenCity.com.

Pocky is about as Japanese as they come but it is not the Japan of sushi and flower arranging but the Japan of Nintendo, Hello Kitty and Godzilla.

Snap into it.. OH YEAH!

Mousse Pocky is the bomb, if you like white chocolate that is. Mmmmm. Unfortunatley, here on the east coast, the only place to find it is the asian market. It'd be great to grab some in the normel supermarket.

A friend of mine had a strange asian junk food page where you could order food like this and also things like Soda flavored gum. If can find the coffee flavored Pocky.

Pocky is one of the divine things on earth. That and rice candy :) I divulge as often as I can think about it (which is probably way to often...). I have only ever found the coffee flavored Pocky once, and wish I could find it again. Yummy.

You know I should have mentioned Mousse Pocky. The little Koala bear thing are called Koara no marchi or March of the Koalas and they are a staple of Japanese junkfood.

http://www.jsnacks.com used to be a great resource to find cool Japanese candy.

I originally got hooked on Pocky and other Japanese candy after my roommates and I won a call-in contest for a short lived j-pop radio show on Harvard's radio station. They sent us a huge box of Japanese candy and other goodies. My personal favorite is the Kusagai gummies (one of the few things I can regularly find up here). As for Pocky flavors, I prefer Almond Crunch.

i live out in Tokyo and i have to draw your attention to another recent variation on the theme... Pocky G ( http://www.glico.co.jp/pocky/pocky_g/ ). As it says on the pack, it's hard & rich... bit like me really (act like a ninja)
