Review : Megaman and Bass for Gameboy Advance

Megaman and Bass box artMegaman and Bass is now out on the GBA. This is one of the "Lost" Megaman Games like Megaman 6 and X3. It was originally called Rockman and Forte and was only released in Japan on the Super Famicom at the very end of the commercial run of the 16-bit era. The game is good but the main focus of the industry was on the new 32-bit Saturn and Playstation and so Rockman and Forte failed to gain an audience outside hard core Megaman fans.

The same thing happened to Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island. But now in the rebirth of the Snes with the Gameboy Advance ruling the hand held market both these unappreciated gems are being mass marketed and are finding an audience with the gaming public.

Capcom stands accused by many intellectual gamers such as myself as being the Disney of Videogames by taking the same formula re-heating it every year or so on a regular basis and serving it up as a new media product for mass consumption. While Disney stands guilty of repressing the artistic development of animation as an art form an acceptable adult mass media. Capcom has been reworking the Megaman games with minimal change to their formula but it is OK because for every remade formula game there is a innovative creative game from them.

The game stars the original Megaman who has the same moves as the original NES games but not the game play upgrades like the wall grab that was introduced in Megaman X. Stylistically this game could have been called Megaman 9 but before the Megaman X series of games.

But you can also as Bass (Forte in Japan) who has some very distinct game play changes than classic Megaman. Bass has a rapid fire cannon that he can aim in different directions when standing still or jumping but you can not charge it up like the Megabuster or fire it when running. He also has a double jump and a dash instead of a slide. The levels are easier to do with Bass but he does less damage to the bosses.

The animation is lush and well done. If you ask me Capcom of Japan has more talented animators working for them than all of Disney. Street Fighter 3 is more impressive than Treasure Planet in my eyes.

Despite the cute and bright Megaman graphics this is one of the hardest Megaman games ever. It has a really high difficulty curve but it has classic Megaman game play. It is good for jaded fans like me who have played just about every damn Megaman game of the last 15 years but it would be a hard game for kids who are new to the series.

This is still a lot of fun and it is sweet to have this game finally released in the US and Europe but it is almost to damn hard.

They need to bring out mega man x1.x2 and x3 for the gameboy advance.

I don't think megaman x7 should be 3D.It don't look all that good like that. They need to keep it 2D.

Yup and how about all 6 of the Nes Megaman games. Email Capcom and let them know that you would buy it.

I dunno but Megaman X7 for the PS2 is going to be 3d but it is looking really hot ( http://www.gamekult.com/tout/jeux/images/ME0000352385 )

It is where I look up most of my gameplay questions.

This was the first Megaman game I have ever played and it was HARD!!!
But I have beaten it with both characters and have noticed that Bass ends up having to work twice as hard as Megaman throughout a lot of the final boss battles even though he is a lot better than Megaman.

can you send some Megaman game?

This game is really good becouse you can not only play as MEGAMAN but as BASS too. I think that the game went alot faster playing as bass, becouse he can dash, jumps higher, and can increase the sterndth of his fire power or the main bullet. MEGAMAN is also a good cheracter, but can only slide and charge his attacks... dont get me wrong but I thk that BASS is a much better cheracter.

I like to play Megaman 6

I just needed to ask that why is it that Megaman and Bass doesn't have a second part to the game and why is that in Megaman Battle Network 6 Cybeast Gregar and Falzar if you go to Undernet Zero you end up fighting Bass if they had worked together?
