Review : McDonalds New Salads

PETA UnHappy MealYesterday I was seriously considering giving up being a vegetarian. Then I went to Wal-Mart and did some shopping and I saw the large quantities of super sized asses in the isled of the store and it changed my mind.

I saw that McDonalds was selling new salads and thought I would go check it out.

Now they have four new salads all with a chicken breast in them and if you order one with no chicken they do not lower your price one bit. I looked at the nutritional content of the salads with chicken online and they did not look that bad and they are indeed much more healthy than a burger and fries. I would not call their Grilled Chicken Bacon Ranch Salad ( 370 calories and 33% daily fat limit) "diet food" but it is not as bad as a Big Mac ( 590 calories and 53% daily fat limit). They all looked like a mix of darker leaves and iceberg lettuce out of a bag with some grape tomatoes. Passable for an instant salad and much better than the old ones but hardly gourmet. They have some new salad dressing curtesy of Paul Newman and company.

So I ordered two of the new Side Salads (15 and 0%) with the Vinegarette (90 and 13%) dressing and an order of medium fries (450 and 33%).

450 Calories for a medium box of fries? Damn!

The salads were actually not bad but they still have a long way to go to revamp their image and market position to one of quality nutrition and health.

McDonalds in NZ ( http://www.mcdonalds.co.nz ) have been promoting salads as part of their 'great new taste' menu for a while now.

Speaking of which, I haven't been to McDonalds in a very long time.

have you ever tried the salads at Wendy's--I especially like the Oriental Chicken Salad. By the way my tomatoes and zucchini are looking great--why not grow your own salad!

Yeah I tried the chicken ceasar and loved every bit of it. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the romaine lettuce was full of iron and nutrients. What you need to remember here is that calories and fat arent the only equation. A good salad like the Mcdonalds salads are a well balanced meal. With a big mac or royale with cheese or a le-big mac you get fats, protiens(meat) and starch (bun) which is made from processed white "refined" flour and has almost NO nutritional value. With the salad they make you get your 2 day supply of iron, protiens and fatty acids supply for the day and fat for about half a day. They are actually very nutritionally sound and remember...you dont have to eat all the dressing in the packet if you dont want to and Newmans dressing is actually very holistic and quite good so give it a whirl. I almost forgot about the baby tomatoes....they are REALLY good for ya and they pop in your mouth like a correctly cooked pea. Anti-oxidants and plenty of them. The starch is provided by the garlic croutons which are very good indeed.

might as well have had a bowl of sugar instead of those fries...:-\

Egh. I'm trying to cut down on fast food. But, its hard not to eat fast food when you work in a fast food restaraunt. :(

Well, I don't know about Micky's Salads.. but i sure do like to those pancake-like breakfast meal....
