I wasted a lot of time yesterday playing Max Payne for the Xbox so I thought I would write a review of it.
Max Payne was in development for a very very long time 4 years actually. But unlike most games that have insanely long development schedules it is actually a really good game. Hell this game was supposed to be a Sega Dreamcast launch title. Daikatana, Oni and Duke Nukem Forever this game is not.
Now another weird thing about this game is that it was made by Remedy Entertainment an company straight out of the hard gansta streets of Kappelitie FINLAND yall! Here is an interview with some of the designers of the game. They be representing Scandinavia!
This game was actually in production long before The Matrix came out but since they were influenced by the same sources a lot of people think that Max Payne is a Matrix rip off. But in all truth The Matrix is stylistic plagiarism of John Woo and Anime.
I actually consider Max Payne a First Person Shooter but the camera is out side of the main character's Point Of View but the game controls are pure FPS.
Max Payne was told through some very cool pulp fiction noir illustrations and voice over internal dialog making it a very flavorful game playing experience. The story is nothing to write home about but it is told so well that it is very entertaining. The writing is full of black comedy and self-awareness. I really liked the writing and voice acting almost better than GTA 3.
The PC and Xbox versions sport a very powerful lighting engine and really well done high-resolution textures. The PS2 version looks good on it’s own but it doesn't measure up to the PC and Xbox versions. However you can now get Max Payne for PS2 as a part of the Greatest Hits Collection for $20. So the PS2 version is still damn good. If you have a kick ass PC get the PC version. The game play works well with a mouse and on the Xbox gamepad.
The one thing that make Max Payne different game play wise than any other FPS is the use of Bullet Time that can be used to slow down the action to a crawl so that Max can execute some really cool looking shots. Max Payne kills bad guys stylistically cool ways much like Dante in Devil May Cry. Jedi Knights have The Force and Max Payne has Bullet Time.
The game play of Max Payne is repetitive but it is repetitive in a good kind of way because it is fun. It is like a cool part of a Hong Kong action movie over and over again.
It really is a unique mature game that is not for everyone but it is a must for all who love Bullet Ballet and gratuitous gun violence.

I have Max Payne for the PC ... played it a while ago (I guess when it came out). It really was pretty awesome. I'm not a huge fan of games like this, I'm more of a strategy gamer. But a friend recommended it, so I picked it up. Loved it. Excellent review, really hit the nail on the head on a lot of points.
Thanks for liking my review. I played Max payne straight for about 5 hours so I went from the beginning to the last part with out cheating. One thing about it that is so typical PC game is that it really uses alot of Save and Loads. So you have to save before every fight and respawn a hell of a lot more than a typical consol game. I mean Max Payne dies and loads from save al ot.
It is a badass game and really did some cool things with "bullet time"! A real ground breaker in a lot of ways. If you have a half way good video card you are amazed at just how good the gfx are and the models of people with thier separately modelled clothing that moves independently just looks fantastic! Like when a character is running in slow-mo sideways and you can see his trenchcoat trailing of behind him and blowing in the breeze....STELLAR ANIMATION DOPENESS!!!! WORD!

Can I use a controller on the Max payne I version for pc? I don't know much about computers.
Yes you can use a Direct X compatible controller.
What do you have to do to get the Direct X controller to work with the game?
Ben this is not the Max Payne tech support forum. Go read the game developer website. ( http://www.rockstargames.com/maxpayne/ )
