Review : Mad Catz RetroCon Gamepad for PS2

On Sunday I finally found a Mad Catz RetroCon Gamepad for PS2. This is a very tight very cool controller and I have to give it props for anyone who grew up in the 80s and know how to kick it old school Nintendo style.

Mad Catz RetroCon Gamepad for PS2

It is really impressive how they were able to cram the extra two buttons, top four L and R Buttons, Dual analog control stick and dual shock rumble motors into this game pad and make it still feel nostalgic. It is a bit taller and more meaty than a normal NES gamepad but it has rubber grips on the back and rounded corners. It really feels like it deserves to be in 1988 but it works. It runs for twenty five bucks so it is not that expensive but not cheap.

Regrettably it does not work with my Gamecube adapter and it did not work with the Gameboy Player. This is unfortunate and it would be really cool if MadCatz made a version of this gamepad for the Nintendo Gamecube. There is always the import Hori old school SNES Game pad for the Gamecube. Bogus!

It did would great with my Playstation to USB adapter and I had a great time playing emulators on my computer. Snes, NeoGeo, TG-16 and Nes emulators are a freaking joy with this thing.

It works out great on fighting games that do not require six buttons like Guilty Gear X2, Virtua Fighter 4 and King of Fighters but for some weird reason my favorite game to play with this is Grand Theft Auto Vice City.

I don't think that gamers who do not remember the 80s will really get this controller but for those of us who played video games during the acid wash, jean jackets, big-hair, Ronald Regan years than this controller is your birthright. It is so 80s it is painful. It is Rad, far-out, totally tubular to the max.

It is so 80s it's painful. Exactly. Those old controlers hurt. Does this one not do the same?

Yeah, call me when your hands shrivel up and fall off so I can laugh at you. :)

Posted by: jason at October 21, 2003 7:25 AM

LMAO! I thought of you when those controllers came into the store! And supposedly, if they do well for the PS2, MadCatz is supposed to release them for the other two consoles. So keep your eyes open.

actually it is pretty nice

Posted by: Jake at October 21, 2003 8:01 AM

Interesting...

Posted by: Matt at October 21, 2003 11:02 PM

Wow, it looks even better than the mockup one they displayed earlier. I'll probably get all nostalgic using it with Gradius III & IV, but using it as a PC controller for emulation seems like reason enough to own one. ...wonder if it can be hacked to work on the Dreamcast, it would be freaking sweet with NesterDC.

Anyone have a problem getting the vibration mode working with ea sports games? much less get it to operate in digital mode....apparently pressing and holding the start and select buttons didn't work for me...

Posted by: JayZizzle at November 15, 2003 9:12 PM

The only EA game that I tried this with is SSX3 and the vibration worked fine. It is probably just a setting with the game.

I scored one of these at the local EBgames a few weeks back, and it's been my primary controller ever since. I used to use the $70 Logitech cordless, but this thing is awesome. The joysticks are good and stiff, too. My only complaint is the shoulder buttons- they take some geting used to. In GTA, I kept looking at the side of my car instead of pulling the e-brake :-p

Posted by: Kyle at December 2, 2003 4:21 PM

I really hope they make a Gamecube version of these But it did take me a bit to get used to the top button layout but I do understand why they did it.

Posted by: Jake at December 2, 2003 4:28 PM

Does this thing work with PSX to PC adapters? Because I'd love to have these things for my emulation station =D

Posted by: detheavn at December 7, 2003 1:33 PM

Yes it does.

Posted by: Jake at December 7, 2003 4:57 PM

Any adapters in particular with which these were tested? I've got the EMS PSX USB 2.0 thing ... actually just means that there's just 2 ports in the thing. But I have a lot of problems with it. Anything else you could recommend to me?

Posted by: detheavn at December 8, 2003 11:35 AM

Yeah I tried it out on the PS to USB adaptor I got at Radio Shack a while ago. It worked like any other PS gamepad. You have to configure DirectX for the new gamepad but it worked fine.

Posted by: Jake at December 8, 2003 11:44 AM

I just bought the mad catz retroCon gamepad and I really wanted to hook it up to my comp, namely for FFXI. anyways, i also have the PS to USB adapter from Radioshack, but i can't get it to work. The buttons are mapped all weird... the right stick is mapped to hit the face buttons. Anyways, how do i go about configuring DirectX to make this work?

thanks.

Posted by: James at December 21, 2003 10:29 AM

Configure your game controller joystick from the the windows control panel

Posted by: Jake at December 21, 2003 4:38 PM

Alright I'm gonna bite and pick up one of these bad boys... and grab a Radshack USB adapter but I have one question about the combo.

Will using the Radshack USB adapters with PSX/N64 emu's allow for rumble emulation on these controllers?

Just curious, I've heard some PSX to USB converters do give rumble over USB but I want to pick up the Radshack ones considering you already guinea pigged em Jake...unless I might have better luck with a different converter as far as rumbling goes.

Thanks for the info!

i plan on getting one of these soon, but for those that use a PSX to USB adapter, look for the super dual box, because it allows force feedback (which is not available on the radio shack version)

Posted by: Frenchie at January 6, 2004 11:41 AM

There really aren't alot of PC games that support rumble

Posted by: Jake at January 7, 2004 10:10 AM

does anyone know how to get this controller into analog mode?, neither the package, nor the website have anything about analog mode.

Posted by: frenchie at January 12, 2004 11:16 AM

I believe it is on all the time.

Posted by: Jake at January 12, 2004 11:39 AM

according to the website, to go to analog mode you have to hold Start and Select for three seconds and than let go.... I havent tried it myself yet, but one thing i've notice about this pad, as much as it hurts me to say it, is that it cant do Start+Select to do an instant quit (example:Soul Calibur)..... besides that tho, i've already gottan used to the shoulder buttons, and when i go over to friend's house for a match i always bring it along and all my friends (who own a ps2) want to get one because it looks and feels good.

Posted by: Ren at January 26, 2004 4:22 PM

i just got 2 last night at electronics boutique and i have to say that i wont go back to using the regular ps2 controllers until my retrocons die.... i just have one question... i am wondering if they can take the same kind of pounding real ninteno controllers can take... you know, like when u get mad a super mario 3 and chuck it against the wall like you did when u were younger... if they can hold up to that then it is the perfect controller

Posted by: kirby at January 27, 2004 8:21 AM

They look pretty sturdy but I would be careful to abuse them. They are not made out of steel and I never really threw or abused my old gamepads

Posted by: Jake at January 27, 2004 9:17 AM

I wrote before about how Start and Select wouldnt do an instant quit (for example: soul calibur... dynasty warrior 4) and i'm wondering if it's just MY controller..
can anyone here relate to what i'm saying?

Posted by: Ren at January 27, 2004 12:07 PM

I can't really test that because I do not have those games. I have Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube

Posted by: Jake at January 27, 2004 12:16 PM

I'm actually looking for places which'll ship this thing to the netherlands, europe. I'm not having any luck finding them, maybe anyone can help? =(

Posted by: detheavn at February 4, 2004 3:31 PM

GameStop.com will ship to the Netherlands

Posted by: Jake at February 4, 2004 4:22 PM

in the pic of the retrocon on top, it's a blue with light grey and white. are this for sale?

Posted by: Ren at February 6, 2004 2:57 PM

There are different colors out there. Yes they are for sale but not here. This is a eZine.

Posted by: Jake at February 6, 2004 3:03 PM

I got me 2 controllers through gamestop, a shame that they shipped 2 different colors though.

The controller feels very sturdy and the analogue sticks are very tight [which in my case is a good thing]. But there's one problem. I'm using a PSX/PS2 to USB adapter which uses the all famous [USB Controller Drivers 23-09-2001] drivers. When I put the controller in analogue mode it seems to be switching between between analogue and fishing mode as rapid as hell, pushing all buttons [looks like someone's button bashing] at the same time.

I don't know if there is a way around this, because I sure as hell'd like to use this thing in analogue mode for emu's and newer games. =)

Posted by: detheavn at February 13, 2004 4:19 PM

What you should do is configure it to an either all digital or all analog setting using the Windows Game Controller pannel.

I have not run into that problem with my Radio Shack PS to USB adaptor. I am playing a NeoGeo Emulator with it as we speak.

Posted by: Jake at February 13, 2004 5:18 PM

It's too bad that there aren't any radio shacks here. I guess I'll just have to resort to online shopping to see if I can find an adapter which works.

Posted by: detheavn at February 14, 2004 9:29 AM

I just went around looking for different adapters and ardered some.

My findings are that the play.com adapter [2 psx pads on 1 USB connection] is great for original PSX and PS2 joypads, but don't function that well with the retrocon [problems described in a previous post].

the EMS PSX USB2 adapter [2 PSX pads on one USB connection] works fine, but the joypad sensitivity leaves something to be desired, you need to press a button very aggressively before it senses activity.

However the Smart Joy Plus [1 PSX pad on 1 usb connection, ordered through lik-sang.com] is perfect. It works like a charm. Clean controls, no bugs, perfect.

So for those who can't order from Radio Shack or don't have one nearby, this is a great alternative.

I just wanted to let you people know, since these pads are great and that the problems I've been experiencing aren't dirictly caused by the joypads.

Posted by: detheavn at February 21, 2004 6:50 AM

I heard from some other site that the analog sticks and the D-pad aren't very responsive. I saw it at Electronics Boutique a few weeks ago, and I decided to check it out online.. Is it really as non-responsive as people say?

Posted by: James at April 19, 2004 5:33 AM

Well it is my favorite gamepad and I think it is quite responsive.

Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at April 19, 2004 9:08 AM

So it's safe to say that I can use it for at least a year and not have it break or anything?

Posted by: James at April 19, 2004 5:07 PM

I have had good luck with Mad Cats products but if you regularly smash and treat your controllers poorly than they might not last as well as with some care.

Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at April 19, 2004 5:58 PM

I got one today, and I can't hit buttons rapidly. If I do, then it only counts as a couple button presses. My dual shocks have no problems with rapid pressing. Does anyone else have this problem?

Posted by: Joe at April 25, 2004 3:11 PM

I just bought a retro con and it constantly vibrates. I have only used on an EA sports game so i do not know if it does the same for every game. Has anyone else had this problem?

Posted by: chris at August 1, 2004 7:57 PM

I have 2 different brand adapters and can not get it to work at all on my PC. I have 2 retrocons and both light up but neither work on my two USB adapters ...what one are you using. I have a Nintendo NES ITX computrer that I built and want to fit in PS2 to USB adapter for use of these controlers but can't fine on that works with them. Any help would be great. Email me if you don't want this to be posted since its off topic. Thank you

Posted by: DaeDreamah at July 21, 2005 7:59 AM

I used a Radioshack brand USB to Playstation2 adapter and it worked for emulators. Have you seen these NES USB Pads?
