Review : Kill Bill Vol 1 on DVD
On Tuesday I stopped by my local DVD retailer and gladly picked up the new DVD of Kill Bill Vol 1. Now I freaking love this movie and getting this DVD is a no-brainer. I do love my Quentin Tarrentino movies including the less well known ones. Now this DVD was delayed several months because the movie studio wanted to push the theatrical release of Kill Bill Vol 2 so that it would be closer to the summer movie season.
This Kill Bill Vol 1 DVD is a pretty no frills non-special edition DVD. There is no commentary track and there is a short documentary that is old pre-made press interviews, no deleted scenes, there is almost no information about Kill Bill Vol 2 but it still is a pretty good buy for people who thought the movie kicked ass. However the in movie concert preformed by the 5678s was included on the DVD. Next time I am over in Seattle's Chinatown I am going to see if I can find a 5678s CD. They rule. This also has the best soundtrack to any movie released in 2003.
The movie looks and sound incredible. The subtitled text to the Japanese dialog was moved down below the movie. If you even look at the pan-and-scan full frame of this movie you deserve to have your DVD player spontaneously combust.
Now there was some longer and more bloody shots in the Anime sequence and in the big Crazy 88s fight the Japanese version of the film never switched to black and white so they got the super bloody fight in it's red free-flowing spurting glory. As a fan of Sam Rami films I can tell you that there is just something weird about American film censors that hate the color red when blood is spurting our of bad guys.
I think they really need to put together a special edition with commentary track but it feels like they deliberately left out cool stuff just so they could make a special edition later on so they can get another twenty bucks from me.
I am defiantly going to see Kill Bill Vol 2 this weekend and I am such Quentin's bitch that I might even get an action figure of The Bride.

Picked mine up this week as well. I'll be watching it tomorrow night, and hopefully I can convince my wife we need to see Vol. 2 ASAP.

There must already be multiple versions of this film on DVD.
We watched a rented copy last night and the longer anime scenes are not there and it most definately switched to black and white right before the most bloody part of the big brawl.

Timm that sounds like the US theatrical version. It is the only one out so far.

I still need to watch this movie. :(
This is off topic, but Jake, have you heard of http://www.nwcge.com/ ? It's a classic gaming expo in Seattle around May 8th. Sounds cool, you should check it out.

yeah, I'm holding out for the SE. Quentin's already said they are in the works. He also said they might come out with a version that has the movies cut together as one movie and has the Japanese version on it.

I'm also holding out until the you-know-it's-coming combined special edition of Vol's 1 & 2 come out later this year with all the bells and whistles attached.
