Review : Gungrave for PS2

Gun Grave for PS2Tonight I stopped by my local Hollywood Video with the intention of renting a game ( $7.50 I think )but it ends up I could buy a used game for a bit more ( $14 ).

Went home with Gungrave for PS2 by Sega.

This is a pretty cool game but it did not find a mass audience. It is fun and super stylish.

Time to make like Chow Yun Fat

This game really plays a lot like Max Payne with a bit of Devil May Cryand a sushi size injection of Anime goodness.

It is third person action game about an almost invincibility dual-gun toting trench coat wearing bad ass with a grudge and unlimited bullets. He carries this big robotic case full of firepower and rockets ala Desperado and jump and shoots bad guys as the action slows down to look cool ala Devil May Cry and Max Payne

The art style is dark Gothic dystopian Anime with a good dose of the ultra violent gun ballet films of John Woo. It is cel-shaded but it really works to add the Anime feel. The cinema intermission are woven in well with the game and there are times that you do not know if you are watching 3d animation, 2d animation and cel-shaded video game animation. Now Sega popularized the whole concept of Cel Shaded video games with Jet Grind Radio so if anyone should use Cel-shading it is them.

There is not much of an award winning plot or complex puzzles to solve it is pure ultra violence mowing down wave after wave of evil henchmen. Not to say that I do not enjoy a bit of the old ultra violence and a glass of milk.

Some of the only complaints that I have heard about this game is that it is too short.

Gungrave is a cool violent game for the ps2. You can get this new for 20 bucks so it is not like it is a major investment. It would be a good choice for all who loved Max Payne and don't want to wait forever for the sequel to come out.

Gungrave is cool, but *was* too short. For me, it was three hours of gameplay short.

Ah well, you know they're turning it into an anime (in production right now) and I think it could really succeed well in this fashion.

That's another one to add to my list. It works out well that by the time I actually get around to playing these games the price has dropped like a rock.

One of the cool things about CD/DVD based games is that once the first publishing run they can drop the cost of the game to around 20 bucks new and it is almost pure profit at that point since the low manufacturing cost of a CD/DVD. I think that Sony's Playstation Best, Xbox Platinum and Nintendo Player's choice is a neat system.

I thought Gungrave was stylistically groundbreaking, but I had a problem with the soundtrack, which as far as I could tell was just the constant thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud-thud from Grave's pistols. There's really not much else to it. You walk around like a bipedal tank on a track and kill a bunch of guys. Good for old-school shooter fans, I guess, but a little variety or replayability would have been nice.
