Review: Gundam Battle Assault 2 PSX1

Yesterday I stopped by the mall and found an interesting game in the new Playstation one section. Gundam Battle Assault 2 for only 20 bucks. Now this looked like a Japanese 2d fighting game for only 20 bucks that I did not already own so I had to get it. I am not that big of a Gundam fan. I mean I like anime and I have nothing against Gundam I just have yet to really get into it. But this game was forking incredible. First of all it is this really weird hybrid 2d animation of separate 3d sprites so it is a combination of street fighter, Parappa and Super Nintendo Mode 7 scaling. Weird but it looks hella cool and the animation was one of the best I have ever seen on the PS One. It really reminds me of Strider 2 for the PS one on how it blends and animates 2d sprites in a 3d world Gundam dates back over twenty years and this game had characters and mecha from Gundams 20 year history. If I were a Gundam fan I know that I would be peeing my pants over this game. The game uses most fighting game moves and it really looks and plays more like a PS2 or Dreamcast game. This is right up there next to Guilty Gear X for kick ass 2d fighting games that do not have a Capcom or SNK logo on them. We need more games like this. It would be really cool if they ported the Super Famicom Gundam Wing fighting game to GBA. Bandai Games made it and I was not expecting quite this much ass kicking for my 20 bucks. Of course there is no way I could ever get BBQ to get into a non Capcom or SNK fighting game but I will enjoy it. Even all you 12-year-old 2d player haters with your PS2 should get this game. PS2 Texture smoothing looks super sweet on this game BTW.

I would give it 8.5 out of 10. Damn good and worth getting if you like 2d fighting games or Anime.
