Review : Futurama Vol 1. on DVD

Futurama DVD 1Last Friday it was my payday so I picked up The Futurama DVD Season One.

Now this was the perfect price for a TV show on DVD at $3o. It features 13 half hour shows with tons of extra stuff and creator commentary on all of it.

The case is very cool looking but not so usable and I would have preferred a traditional plastic case but this is just judging a DVD by it's cover.

The show is Matt Groening's first post Simpson's TV project and it is fresh creative and funny as heck. It also sports state of the art Cel-Shaded 3d and digital compositing and color as well as a very slick but detailed art design. It looks to good for just a stupid TV shot like the Family Guy... shudder..

Futurama is full of really smart commentary show with modern social commentary. It is of course in a sci-fi setting but the humor and commentary is not limited to sci-fi stuff and that is what makes it so smart and entertaining and relevant.

The commentary tracks are really the reason for buying the DVD even if you have seen all the show. Matt Groening keep things fresh with being the scene stories and are a joy to listen too. The subtitle tracks accurately follow the slang and non-proper English of the show better than some that I have seen. You can also play it in Spanish and French if you so desire. But if you are that bored than you need a life. This is what the South Park DVDs should have been like but no. They wussed out and took out the creator commentary tracks.

The show stars Fry a typical 20-something Gen-X slacker who is transferred to the 31st century in a cryogenic mishap, one-eyed Leela who is voiced by the actress who played Pegg Bundy in Married with Children, Fry's great (great, great, etc.) nephew Professor Farnsworth who is a mad senile scientist who owns the intergalactic delivery service that the crew works for. Everyones loves Bender the abusive alcoholic robot and the cast is rounded out by Dr. Zoidberg, Hermies, and Amy Wong. There is also guest stars from the 20th. century who like Leonard Nimoy who are kept alive as heads in jars. It is funny stuff!

I feel guilty they are not making the show anymore and that I should have watched it more to keep it on the air. Fox didn't cancel it but they stopped ordering more shows so the team responsible broke up. Damn.

Cartoon Network is currently showing the show during their Adult Swim time slot at 11PM Monday through Thursday.

I can't wait to get the other seasons ship on DVD and I can't wait to see what Matt Groening does after the Simpsons finally ends.

This show is sheer brillance. I've been bugging my brother to buy it, but if he doesn't then I might.

I enjoy it more than The Simpsons because I can probably relate to it better, whereas my older brother only thinks the Professor (and that's 13 'greats' if memory serves) is the funniest character.

And if the South Park DVDs are as lame as you just said, then I'll stick with my brothers Real Media of all them seasons.

The problem with the South Park DVDs is that the company that made the DVDs didn't like what Trey and Matt said on the commentary tracks so they censored it and made the DVDs with out it. Trey and Matt are pissed and so are the fans.

I've seen talk (but no action yet) about projects to make unauthorized commentary tracks available online (not just for South Park). with DVR you could do it, I think.

I pre-ordered the DVD set from Amazon and paid $25 for it, and then I see it on sale at Best Bitch, er Buy for $33! It's still worth it at $50 though due to extras and quality of the show.

And don't forget that "new" episodes are still airing (Fox, Sundays at 7pm). The last season of the show was preempted by football so often that there are still about 8 or 9 episodes that have yet to be run. Good thing I got myself a TiVo recently :)

I live in Washington state so if I ordered from Amazon I would have to pay shipping AND state sales tax.
