Review : Futurama Season 2 on DVD

Last week the second DVD set of my favorite animated series came out. I love Futurama and I am still loaded with guilt for not really watching it until it was close to being canceled. Technically it was never canceled but rather Fox stopped ordering new shows but the effect is still the same.
There was three production seasons created spread out over four years so there is yet another DVD set to be released. This is a four disc DVD set with creator commentary tracks and deleted scenes on every disc and every show. There is also French and Spanish tracks and really good subtitles that include sound effects and music hints.
Matt Groening and pals just keep getting better and better. The dialog and gags range from stupid cheap jokes to obscure high level cerebral jokes about math, science and other nerdom.
There are a total of 19 shows on the sets 4 discs.
My favorite episodes in this collection are.
A Head in the Polls with the head of Richard Nixon running for the President of Earth.
Xmas Story With a killer robot Santa who KILLS those who are naughty.
How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back was a break out show for Jamaican Beaurocrats everywhere.
The Problem with Popplers won an award for dealing with social issues. It is about how eating chicken nuggets can be wrong and PETA are assholes.
Mother's Day proves that when really old people have sex it is both funny and disturbing.
Like I said before Futurama is full of really smart modern social commentary. It is in a sci-fi setting but the humor and commentary is not limited to sci-fi stuff and that is what makes it so smart and entertaining and relevant. I was torn between this DVD set and the new PS2 game of Futurama. If you have not seen the show but love the Simpsons then you owe it to yourself to check out Futurama.
I can't wait to see what the creators of this show do next. Probably do the Simpsons for another decade.

I never did get into Futurama. But there was one that I watched that was fantastic that had all these old video game characters in it. I can't remember what the plot was...

my fave was definitely A Head in the Polls...:)

No guilt here, I watch the series premier, and every epeisode when it aired first, even the numerous pre-empted by NFL episodes where I didn't understand anything due to missing the first ten minutes.
I also TiVo every episode as it airs, and own Season 1 on DVD. I'll be buying Season 2 very soon.

Over the last month I've rewatched the first season DVDs (mostly with the commentary) in preparation for the second ones to arrive. All good stuff. Especially Zoidberg.
I've rented the PS2 version of Futurama, but haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.

There is even more Zoidberg in Season 2 including trips to his home planet. I would have gotten the PS2 gamebut I just got a NeoGeo Pocket and F-Zero GX and SoulCalibur 2 are going to be out on the Gamecube next week.

Good move, Jake -- save your purchasing power for those games. Futurama the game is unfortunately nothing special, though the cutscenes are pretty damn funny.
My hope is that someday, somewhere, some gmae developer will actually pay off one of Groening's licenses. Perhaps "Life in Hell" for the N-Gage.

Hypno-toad says buy the Second Volume of Futurama. Never watched the show myself, but my roommates say it is funny.

I think Konami made a kick ass arcade game based on the Simpsons. It was like the Ninja Turtle and Xmen game. Pitty it never made it to home systems. Also Simpson's Road Rage is actually a pretty fun game. The other one still suck.

I could be wrong, but I was sure there are 4 (1ACV -> 4ACV) production seasons, which were split over 5 television seasons.
Boxed set 1 and 2 are fantastic, recommended for anyone who enjoyed the show, they are entirely rewatchable.

Amazon.com, Suncoast.com and BN.com all do not have Season 3 in their systems nor have I seen it in stores. Season 3 of the Simpsons is out on DVD but not Futurama

season 3 of futurama is definitely out on dvd, i have it sitting under my tv as we speak.
a quick search in amazon uk pulls it up:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000092WDA/202-0056558-5181430
it's not on amazon.com for some reason.
i bought it in an australian department store (kmart), not online. it was $74.95 AUD. and considering australia is the arse end of the world, and things usually turn up here 6 months after the USA, i'm surprised it's not in amazon.

Well damn it! It looks like it is out in the rest of the world but not in the US now. There is no US release date on the books for Season 3.
