Review : Dragon Ball Z : Budokai for PS2

DBZ Budokai on PS2 Box Last time I was at Blockbuster they had a whole bunch of PS2 games used just in time for the holidays. They were ten bucks a pop before BBQ could shave off even more with his discount. So I walked away with four games for a little over twenty bucks. One that I got was Dragon Ball Z : Budokai for PS2.

The game just hit the twenty buck greatest hit PS2 collection, was ported to Gamecube and had a sequel released.

The show Dragon Ball Z is a really weird old long running animation that was an industry in of itself in Japan but to just call it weird underestimates the relative inaccessibility of the show to potential viewers who are not fans. Kids freaking love the show and parents don't know what the hell to think about it.

As it should be it is a simple but weird 3d fighter that accurately re-creates the anime show. The graphics look killer but maintain the look and specific anime feel of the show. The moves and combat is right out of the reality of the show .. or should I say surreality of the show.

The problem is that the Anime show is really hard to get into and unless you have seen more about it can be as weird a French film student's school project. That being said I was impressed with the quality of the recreation of the weird world of DBZ. I know much about the Anime and enough to get the game

If you are a fan of the Anime that you probably already have this game as you should. If you are looking for a easy to get into 3d fighting game on PS2 that Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution or Tekken 4 would be a safer pick for your twenty bucks.

I don't think it's hard to understand. What's hard to understand about "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
"His power levels are off the scale!"! "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
for 30 minutes a day?

DBZ heralds the longest periods of constipation in the history of television.

And the line about 'a French film student's school project' - remind me to upload my project from this year. :p

I taught web design in a 2-week summer school program for 8-11 year olds a couple of years back. (yeah, it was an entirely insane experience.)

several of the boys were entirely obsessed with DBZ; they knew every character, what they did, their relationship to the other characters, etc., etc. they really, really wanted to make DBZ fan sites.

the concept of copyright was foreign to them ("what do you mean I can't take that picture?"), which was both stressful and charming for me as a teacher.

(Pokemon is a guilty pleasure, and I love artsy anime, but DBZ just baffles me.)

Dragon Ball Z is one of those elementary school boys cultural trends that parrents and adults will just not get. Like Power Rangers, Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers.

VF4:Evolution is the deal of the year, in my opinion...

Dragon Ball Z isn't even meant for kids. The age rating that its given is 15+

American companies have to censor it and cut it to comply with the rules and regulations of America. Thats why the english version sucks.

How much is cut?
Japanese version - 291 episodes
English version - 271 episodes

20 episodes worth.......get it...

watch the REAL Japanese Dragon Ball Z then you can moan & groan about it.
DB/Z is on of the most successful animated shows in the world hence the millions of fans. I personally dub it as brilliant and the most classical anime ever created. These are the words from an experienced anime fan (9 years and still going strong).

Hope you realise now.
Have a nice day.

Nut I have been watching Anime for over twenty years. I watched Battle Ship Yamato in the early 80s and have been watching Anime probably longer than you have been alive. But we were actually talking about the game.
