Review : Capcom Classics Collection for PS2

CapcomClassicCollection.jpgToday I was pleasantly surprised to see that Capcom has released Capcom Classics Collection for PS2 for a mere $20.

This is a collection of 22 Capcom arcade games from the 80s and very early 90s. Well 21 arcade games and one Super Nintendo game but who is counting?

The collection includes
1. 1942
2. 1943
3. 1943 Kai
4. Street Fighter II
5. Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting
6. Street Fighter II Champion Edition
7. Ghosts’ N Goblins
8. Ghouls’ N Ghosts
9. Super Ghouls’ N Ghosts
10. Son Son
11. Exed Exes
12. Pirate Ship Higemaru
13. Vulgus (Capcom’s 1st game ever)
14. Commando
15. Mercs
16. Gun.Smoke
17. Section Z
18. Bionic Commando
19. Forgotten Worlds
20. Legendary Wings
21. Trojan
22. Final Fight

This collection really documents their early arcade games and I hope they follow it up with more volumes and their home system games. Back in the day Capcom made a whole bunch of shooters and about half this collection are shooters but there are some certifiable classics in this pack.

The company that helped Capcom put this together really knows their emulation and all of these game are reproduced and given a wonderful treatment. There is an option on some of the vertically formatted games to have an enhanced mode so the scores are on the side to take advantage of the vertical aspect ratio on a normal TV.

Now these are the arcade version and there are some notable differences between the arcade games and NES home versions. So this comes with a quite different version of Bionic Commando than most NES gamers remember. This is the super hard super action packed arcade game. So if your only exposure was to the NES games don't panic.

The Dual Analog sticks on the PS2 Dual Shock are absolutely awesome on Forgotten Worlds and it simulates the stick and knob spinner of the arcade game. Oh the version of Final Fight is completely uncensored and all three fighters are selectable. There are the hot 80s MTV girls there like the original arcade game. There is also trivia on each game and some unlock-able goodies.

I am glad to see that the upcoming PSP game will have different titles and I can't wait for Capcom to release more classic games in another collection like this.

This game is rated Teen but the old school combat of Final Fight and Forgotten Worlds seems tame by todays standards. Every gamer that lived through the 80s should have this game in their PS2 library. This collection is exactly how older games should be treated and sold as a new product. Capcom should be commended and they deserve your twenty bucks.

This is really a compilation of a series of old releases (for the most part) that were Japan only for the Saturn and PlayStation (Saturn versions were better) called the Capcom Generation series with some extra titles thrown in. Think Namco Museum but far slicker and with much more accurate arcade emulation, which you commented on.

Capcom Generation 1:
1942
1943
1943 Kai

Capcom Generation 2:
Ghosts’ N Goblins
Ghouls’ N Ghosts
Super Ghouls’ N Ghosts

Capcom Generation 3:
Son Son
Exed Exes
Pirate Ship Higemaru

Capcom Generation 4:
Commando
Mercs
Gun.Smoke

Capcom Generation 5:
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting
Street Fighter II Champion Edition

Those are from memory as the only one I still have is Capcom Generation 1 after stupidly selling off my Saturn stuff years ago but I'm currently rebuilding.

Just the same the collection is WELL worth the $20 as you said and even better it seems the value of the Capcom Generation games is going down due to it. There's a Bionic Commando upright, all original, at my local TILT - can't wait until they put it up for sale for the holidays. Anything less than $250 and she's mine! Oh yeah, is it just me or is there one jump near the start of the first stage that's completely impossible to clear?

So any word on what games will be with the PSP version?

Picked up my copy for Xbox this week. Between it, Midway Arcade Treasures 3, and the Namco Anniversary set, I've been in classic gaming heaven.

Sold!

Although, are the Street Fighter series of games anything like the combat style of Street Fighter II Alpha (PSOne)? It sends chills down my back to think of the hours of life battling M. Bison waiting for the Ren and Stimpy Show.

Sweet, decadant nostalgia....

> Bionic Commando

hell yeah!

how does the arcade version differ?

/gets nervous.

There is a short trailer for the PSP version on the PS2 version. It had Knights of the Round and Strider! But No I don't know too much about the PSP version.

There is no Street Fighter II Alpha but there is Street Fighter Alpha 2. Yeah these are the first three versions of Street Fighter 2.

The NES versions of Strider and Bionic Commando were pretty different from the Arcade games. The home games were sort of Zelda 2 like quest games while the arcade version were just insane liniar action games. The arcade games are great but the NES version are almost totally different games that share similar game play mechanics.

I need this on the PSP! Any idea if American region games work on the PSP? I'm moving from the UK to Kentucky within the next 3 or 4 months...
