Review : Aqua Teen Hunger Force season 1 on DVD
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is one hell of an animated TV show. It is a Cartoon Network original for their over 18 late night Adult Swim line up. This show walks the line between brilliance and stupidity. This is a surreal parody of a super hero show with a point of view of a highly educated and highly stoned collage students. I don't know if it is a brilliant abstract Dadaist reaction to the modern media sphere or some heavily retarded sophomoric comedy aimed at emotionally stunted adult Cartoon Network viewers. Since I fall into that later classification of TV and DVD viewers i really dont know what it is all about.
It is a limited animation show with digital compositing. It is not the highest frame rate and the smoothest animation but there is a pretty unique design of the shows sets and characters. But hell at least it is a 2D animated show that is completely done in the US of A.
The Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a trio of fast food based super heroes that don't really solve super villain problems. They live in a shitty house in the suburbs of New Jersey next to their neighbor Carl. Carl is a middle aged fat bald mustached Jersey guy clad in flip flops, sweat pants and a wife beater tank top. He is actually my favorite character. The Hunger Force is Master Shake a giant sarcastic and slightly evil giant cardboard cup and straw. He is greedy and self obsessed. Master Shake does not really have any special powers. There there is Meatwad who is a talking ball of fried meat that has a brain of a grade schooler. He can turn into a hot dog and igloo and he will help transport the team by pulling a cart with painted Danger cart. The only smart one is Frylock a floating pack of French fries with a goatee. He can shoot lasers from his eyes and he has "Frydar". Each show opens up with a mad scientist on the south New Jersey shore that will some time unleash a monster on the Garden State. They live in a crappy house with a Master Shake shaped door and "GET OUT" spray painted on the front.
Pretty much standard Saturday morning cartoons.... in Hell. The average shows are only 15 minutes long but the dual DVD pack is jammed pack of surreal cartoon goodness. This is wholly inappropriate for kids of any age but for us that are old enough to buy a pack of smokes then it is late night party time. The cartoon is greatly enhanced with a Rum and Coke and microwave popcorn. This is surreal and stupid at the same time.

I've been a huge fan of this show for a while now. I really need to pick up the various seasons on DVD, but have yet to do so.

Adult Swim in Australia/NZ has yet to latch onto the likes of ATHF and Sealab. Instead we get G1 Transformers and Inuyasha.

Well can't you import the Region 1 DVDs at watch it on you PC or rip it to Region 0?

Well, Master Shake DOES have a super power, its just never really addressed on the show. If you are a huge fan (like myself) you'll eventually notice that everything that Shake throws explodes. You just have to keep an eye out for it :)

What kind of idiot thinks that the evil guy with his middle finger up looks anything like a bomb? BOMBS DO NOT HAVE BIG LIGHT UP PICTURES ON THEM!!!
