Review: Apex Digital AD-1100W
Last night I had a really nice dinner with Anna and had a really good talk with her about a lot of things that are on both of our minds. Any-who Before that I went over to Wal-Mart (I know Wal-mart is evil but they didn't have it any other place) to pick up a gift for Anna and her family for Christmas. So i got them a $60 DVD player that I read about on Gizmodo.com
Now you are probably asking your self why the hell would I want to get them a $60 DVD player? I read up on the reviews online on Cnet and some other places and besides some drives with bad motors on one batch these got pretty good reviews. The box is really small and Anna and I wrapped it just in time for her sister and mother to arrive home so I gave it to them and they opened it early at my insistence. They loved it.
The thing is small it is about the same size of a NES but not as tall so I installed in right on top of their not often used 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System. The picture and sound was really good and the only movie they had on DVD on hand was Pulp Fiction. It looked just as good as my Playstation2 and I was impressed on the zoom and pan functions on it.
Also it can play JPEGs, MP3s and WMAs burned to a CD so I will have to bring over some disks to Anna's place to try it out. I like the little thing an might get one to watch movies on instead of my PS2. I read somewhere that a lot of movies will kill your PS2 drive but I have never heard any hard proof of the rumor.
Now this is not for people who have several thousand buck home theater systems but if you want to ad a good cheap DVD player to a average TV than this is quite interesting.

Hm. I have an earlier-model Apex player, and my girlfriend figured out that by burning a certain program to a CD and running it in the player, it could be re-flashed and have its regional restrictions removed. So I'm enjoying my Futurama DVD set from the U.K. Maybe this one can do something similar? Worth looking into.

Well I can play any region DVD and Pal DVDs on my computers DVD rom and my us Playstation2 can play import Japanese Region 2 DVDs using my Gameshark2. But that does sound worth researching.

Interesting I had no idea DVD players were so hackable

I spent an afternoon sick watching movies on that DVD-Player, it seems descent except that I couldn't get a hang of the remote, it just didn't seem intuitive, I kept clicking on the wrong actions by mistake.
Just need to spend some time getting used to the remote.

The DVD Player is good but mine has one problem, it makes this very loud humming noise when the disc spins. Sometimes it doesn't, most of the time it does. Navigating through menus sucks with the horribly designed remote too.

Mine has never hummed but what do you expect for a $60 DVD player?

Mine hums sometimes too. You just slap it and it'll stop rattling. I've had it for over a year and other than the occasional rattle it works fine.
